Cover Letter Help

Hi Everyone, I’m sorry if this question has been asked but I did a search and didnt find anything overly relevant. I’m applying for a junior analyst-type position and I’ve never wrote a cover letter for a finance job before. I just graduated so I’m applying to these types of positions (although they are hardly any at all). I was wondering what exacly should I mention in the cover letter other than describing why I would be a good candidate based on what is required for the job. I know that for iBanking positions they’re concerned with your ability to work 100 hour weeks and your cover letter should convey that message. Is there any particular tone I should be aiming for with this type of position or specific things I should be mentioning? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Once you tailor your resume to the specific position, I like to use the cover letter to tie my resume to the job requirements. Especially if your previous job experience is not directly related, this is the opportunity to make it look more relevant than it is. I would recommend being concise as well, as nobody wants to read your life story. Best of luck!

Answer these questions: who are you, why do you want work here (your motivation), what can you add to the job?

you can use the cover letter to highlight the parts of your resume and experience that are most relevant to the job.

my thought was that cover letters were always worthless… I never read them when I got handed a stack of resumes to weed through. Anyone else feel the same? I’m debating on whether to make one or not to send out in my next job hunt… What do YOU think?

I am with you. My covers are very short. It just explains why I am sending you a document.

That’s why good cover letters have bullet points. The reader probably doesn’t want to slog through a bunch of paragraphs, but you might just skim a few bullet points.

My advice? No one reads cover letters. They are just opps for misspellings and poor writing.

This job requires a cover letter so I have to do one. Thank you all for your input. I’ll try to hit all the points mentioned here while keeping it brief and concise.

In that case, I agree with the bullet point advice.
