Today is my first day of work at the small CPA firm. I was let go from an AM in October 08. Right away, I hit the ground running processing individual tax returns. I am on my 3rd return today. All I can say is wow! Many of these clients are quite affluent and have some pretty beefy returns. I never saw anything like this while working at the tax prep franchise 2 years ago. I share an office with a young woman who is very helpful. So far so good.

She is married with children though. We are essentially the ‘back office’ of a CPA firm. We take incoming documents, copy, arrange, file, etc. We input everything into the computer and to the best of our ability prepare the tax return for the client. We keep an itemized sheet regarding issues, questions, missing items, and so forth. Once we’re as far as we can get, we pass it off to one of the partners to review and sign off on. The partners have meetings with clients most of the day and answers client questions, provides appropriate advice, and so forth. So deep down it reminds me of that same back office job, but it is not so bad; at least for now. I have been warned several times about how busy March-April is. Also I’m learning a ton as income taxes are not one of my stronger bodies of knowledge.
Without pics, this thread is useless i mark it for deletion.
I give the future number of daily updates by ditchdiggerCFA an over/under of 1.
CPA firm. That must be pretty brutal. How are you going to study during busy season?

That is helpful.

On your first day, kill a the toughest-looking guy you think you can take down. That’s the only way to properly assert yourself in the hierarchy.

You’ll more than likely get stabbed and sent to the hole but you’ll solidify yourself as the office wild card… that my friend is an intangible that will not be soon forgotten.
Ugh. I tell some of the guys I just passed level one of the cfa exam. They say, ‘‘Oh, certified financial advisor?’’ Stupid cpas.

How is day 2 going?
No complaints yet. My office mate is very friendly which is a pleasant change from my previous job. I’m cranking on returns still and learning a ton. Perhaps I could get used to this tax business and obtain my CPA ;-).
so you are doing individual returns a la H&R Block? also, you keep mentioning the hottie coworker. you have a crush on her.

I would never advise anyone to go to any franchise tax prep or anyone without a CPA for that matter. Luckily, the experience at H&R got me this temporary job.
I think you are lucky that you had the skills to get a job. Its tough out there for those without skills.
how long is each return taking? any complications so far? if i wanted to do it in my spare time, would it be best to contact some local firms about helping?
