I’m interested in investing in a deep value mutual fund. Which ones should I look at?
What is a deep value mutual fund?
I think I understand what he’s looking for: WhitecollarRedneck would like a mutual fund that engages in long-short type approach to investing in pickup trucks and vehicles from the 60’s, as well as Iroc series camaros and firebirds with actual birds on the hood, preferably with t-tops. They purchase trucks and vehicles that are mechanically good with rough bodies, and then purchase trucks and vehicles that are mechancally rough with good bodies. They mate these vehicles, and then sell them on local area craigslists at 30-40% markups. He is leery of 12B-1 fees and expense ratios of 125 BPS or more.
I think most people define deep value as the cheapest third of the value universe on some value measure, whether it’s price to book or whatever - generally the next step up in quality from distressed. But I like pickup trucks too!
Bumping this thread for three reasons:
- WhitecollarRedneck is a great user name
- jcole’s witty retort
- …but seriously I’d be curious to learn about some deep value managers.
Any of you guys invest with this strategy? Any book or blogs about deep value investing you could recommend?
I think John Hancock Classic Value is a deep value fund. I had a friend that really liked the manager, but I can’t remember his name.
I think that fund had or has Rich Pzena as the mgr. you can check out Pzena asset mgmt. I’m not a fan, but its a name to check out. The strategy isn’t that conducive to a mutual fund if u ask me, daily liquidity can be a bummer in names that require patience doesn’t jive. Check bauposts13fs.
