Deferral for death of family member?

Unfortunately, my dad passed away last week after a long fought battle with ALS. I was wondering if anyone out there has dealt with the same thing and granted a deferral for the test. I read somewhere it’s on a case by case basis. I’m still going to push real hard and try to study as much as possible, but just wanted to know in case I just can’t handle the studying over the next few weeks, that I could at least get a free test next year. Thanks.

My condolences on your loss. You’ll be in our prayers.

I don’t know about the deferral, but I encourage you to contact CFA Institute to find out. Best of luck.

So sorry for your & your family’s loss - it’s hard, but hang in there.

condolences , hope you get the deferral and be peaceful in mind

My condolences at your loss.

Write to CFA institute. i am sure they will consider your circumstances and i am hopfeul they will grant you deferral. From what i have heard its on a case by case basis.

But you have to write to them immediately.

Hello,

my condolences with you…stay strong. can you give me your contact…need to ask something about ALS.

Thanks all for your thoughts. I still plan on taking test but will see what cfa has to say.

Sure thing. Bcj686@gmail.com

Sorry to hear about your loss.

However, in my (very limited) experience, CFAI doesn’t grant exceptions. They might defer you to next year’s exam (basically–take the test next year instead of this year). I’ve even heard stories where a guy broke his arm (his writing hand) a week before the exam, and they told him, “You’ve got another hand–use it.” So he had to learn to write with his other hand in a week.

But you never know until you try. Best of luck to you.

Our condolences at your deep loss. From various feedbacks (other than Greenman’s above) regarding CFAI’s views/rules and considerations for such requests of ‘free test next year’ over the years in this and other forums I feel you may only aggravate your sadness and frustration by requesting them for it and getting a refusal.

From your post it seems you are more or less ready to face the L3 exam and I am sure, if your Dad was alive he would have liked you to face it and pass it irrespective of his state of health. He fought the battle and as God may have wished he lost it but that should not be so overbearing that you should give up your battle during the last hour. You have still a month to go. Have courage and gather yourself, discuss with your family members and with their support and late father’s blessing win it.

Yes, it is tragic indeed and may have deep impact on your immediate life and thoughts. What happens in life often can’t be undone but any happening, however tragic and sad it may be should not be undo your goals for which you prepared for almost a year, single-mindedly. Forget CFAI’s permission option and be at it with whatever energy and focus you have at your command. I am sure it will make the soul of the departed (who fought the battle for long without giving up on it) much more at peace than you being unable to do so and opting out this year. Success or no success is a question that will come later, now go for it and try your best for success. All our best wishes are with you.

my condolences with you… I think its remarkable that you still want to take the exam. That shows real strength of character and perseverence.

@mygos

Thanks for your thoughts. Very helpful and as I do see it the same as you, I mainly wanted to see what my backup plan would be if I could not handle the studying over the next couple weeks. You put it very well though, and I do plan on putting full effort.
