I want to register for the June 2010 Level II exam (provided I get good results in July), but it’s very likely that I could be on deployment during the period of the exam, so I would not be able to sit for it. Does anyone know if something like this happens, if the CFA Institute will defer my fees and such to the following year and allow me to take it then, or will I just be SOL?

I dont think anybody would know the answer. Your best bet would be to send an inquiry from the website. I found the CFAI to be very quick in replying to queries.
You could ask CFA, that is the best bet, but in general they let you defer I thought as long as you did it by a certain date, so unless they aren’t going to let you know until right before hand I think you have to defer it say a month ahead of time, but I am not sure I just know it is some lead time.
I dont think they let you defer exams. I was sick for the Dec. 07 exam. I gave them around 1 months notice that I would not be able to write it and that I was on a waiting list for surgery. They told me that they would not defer the exam to June (against their policy), instead they refunded me the money and I re-enrolled for June. I would contact them to be for certain though. Maybe different circumstances get different treatment.
If you search the forum, you’ll get instances on both sides - deferral and not. The only way to be sure is to email CFAI and present your specific case. You’ll get a response back in a couple of days.

Busprof, I am so sorry to hear about your loss, your story literally brought me to tears. I’m not sure if you’ve seen it, but there is a thread in GD where people have been offering their condolences. http://www.analystforum.com/phorums/read.php?1,1011109
