Delhi gang rape and item number culture

Folks, just a min - I wasnt trying to blame anyone country or religion there at all…

I wrote it with a lot of frustration as you could imagine and all I wanted to convey was that - these incidents might stop if we have stricter punishment. Unfortunately for me, very poor choice of word to describe what I meant - Shariah law…

I didnt mean to insult anyone/culture or country here, please! Thanks!

My favorite fatwa is the one in which you can only have a female coworker if she breastfeeds you.

FYI, child sex ratio in Punjab, which is among the wealthiest state of India, has dipped to 846. Literacy rate is also 77%.

http://www.census2011.co.in/census/state/punjab.html

Thus the corelation between wealth/education and preference of male child appears actually positive.

^

being the richest state in india doesn’t count for anything does it?punjab might be the wealthiest state but the richest reigons are the urban areas/new cities

i was talking about a class of people.the ones that are present mostly in urban areas.even though punjab is the wealthiest state in india it’s per capita income is below 1 lakh.

people who have woked in corporate india for 4-5 years make at least 6 lacs.see the difference?

im sure you’re educated and in your social circle do you think anyone would abort a child based on sex?

^yes

really?

why?

what do they do?where are they from?

If you think that there is no preference for male child in middle class/urban India, then obviously I live in a very different world than yours. Actually rich educated have more means to circumvent the law and bribe the doctors to determine the sex of the foetus. And thus there are instances that during the second/third pregnancy, earlier children being girls, couple would continue with the the pregnancy only after determining the sex.

Women are necessarily harassed for giving birth to female child mainly by in-laws.

May be I am too backward. But i see it as a norm than exception.

^true, my relatives in India just had a baby girl and they were like really pissed off.

Its true actually… There is a very small section of society who just want a healthy kid irrespective of the sex. I have friends who have tried to have more kids because they are desperate for a son! Ridiculous in my opinion, thats their choice though and no wonder we are a populated country :frowning:

Really promising to see young Indians on this forum openly and honestly discussing the evils of the Indian society and truthfully accepting where the problems are, without getting defensive. That too on a forum full of foreigners.

It’s pretty common among people to wish for a son in our part of the world since there are no social security benefits/retirement homes and parents hope that their son (or sons) will take care of them when they retire. You’ll find it common that parents spend all their earnings on kids (education and other bills) and expect that when they grow old, their son (not daughters bcz when they get married, their primary responsibility shift towards taking care of her husband/children etc) will look after them. And may be thats why people of limited means usually don’t like having daughters (they worry about expenses like education and dowry, neither of which will benefit them), however, didn’t know that some rich folks also do that. People are weird.

^ this + i have a 5 month old son and when the news of this horrible rape flashed on the tv, my wife exclaimed for the first time that “Thank God! We have a son”

Constantly protecting daughter was also on my mind when wife was expecting.

I got a feeling that Indians don’t like to listen to Non-resident Indians (NRIs) or foreigners to tell them what to do or not do. May be things are changing

i loathe to genralize anything in india because i feel it’s almost impossible to make a statement and say yea india is like that.

the rich educated people that still show preference for the male child are backward minded who have achieved this status through dubious means, corruption etc.

keep in mind that the reddy’s have entered india’s middle class mainly through land ownership.less than 10 years ago they were farmers.

which is why i specifically mentioned ‘corporate india’.

look i get it.most of our country is still misogynistic.but i honestly believe that education + wealth will level the field.

as a thumb rule preference for male child in the rural poor is the norm not the exception.

’ urban middle class in the exception not the norm.

the numerous studies done on this back me up.the main reason which if eliminated would be a massive step forward is dowry.the governments done their bit by making it illegal,

the next step is education.the sooner they remove the ridiculous controls they have in this sector the better.once decent education is made available to our majority we will leap forward a couple of decades in a short span

NRI’s are the worst.annoying pricks

Isildurr, you have written too much. Basically you are saying that despite personal experiences you dont feel that there is a general preferences for male child in India. I think you are wrong

Preference of male child is everywhere. Some reasons that I can think of

  1. Women are victims of rape, eveteasing while men are perpetrators

  2. Women bear children which makes them difficult to pursue full fledge careers hence reducing earning power

  3. Dowry

And consequences

  1. Less than 20% girls in all leading institutions like IIT, IIMs

  2. Few females heading the corporates, (although I give it to you that there is fair representation in politics)

  3. Leading male actors charging 10 times than leading female actors

  4. Women cricket has 1/100th viewership of ‘cricket’

The problem with steretyping India is that India is so huge and diverese that whatever outlandish generalisation you come up with you are likely to find examples to back up your claims.

Dude, Salon is a serious news webiste. You’ve just never heard of it because it focuses on cultural and political stuff which doesn’t interest your average CFA Candidate.

In urban india among the educated.

i posted a study.if you want i can post ten more government sponsored detailed studies where the main main reasons are as i had already posted.they are factors that get eliminated by wealth and education.

then someone said that it happens among some middle class indians too.the general route to middle class in this country is education and then entering the corporate sector.

or education and starting something of your own.

i concede that the practice is still prevalent among middle class indians who haven’t taken the general route to enter this class.my example was the reddy’s of andhra.

the first 2 reasons are not indian centric.the last is which is illegal.education should kill it off

^ I agree
