Delhi gang rape and item number culture

Fazed vs phased

Since the chinese have been brought into the fold, allow me to add they always cut in line. If there’s a gap they’ll slide right in there. Happens in the airport all the time.

Back to rape for a moment:

They’ve officially charged 5 guys with rape, murder and kidnapping.

I think an interesting reaction here in India is that people here are outraged but want the death penalty.

Whereas feminists in the West are very outraged but reticent about the death penalty.

Will these guys get hung? I purchased a piece of land from a convicted murderer here once. He gets to leave jail every so often for all sorts of reasons: sick relatives etc.

I think the Japanese are most traditional today, although Chinese and Indians do maintain a lot of old cultural elements.

Most people have no issue with the death penalty apart from US liberals.

Since I’m grammaring the hell out of people today, art is hung and people are hanged.

^ and Europeans. They really hate it. In Norway that guy who murdered 70 children lives a better life in prison than most American citizens.

good one. Although I’ve been told that I’m “hung” before by Blake’s Mom.

Actually, most developed countries have outlawed the death penalty. By allowing the death penalty (in some states), the US is the exception.

Problem with death penalty is that it is the maximum. So if I have a committed a crime worth death penalty, there is no downside left for me. I could very well do anything as downside is defined.

If rape is punishable with death, there is no incentive for keeping the girl alive.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I think back in the 18th century in the UK robbery was punishable by death so people frequently just killed whomever they robbed. There was no upset to leaving the victim alive as the punishment was the same either way. Murdering just made the witness/victim silent a real upside if you are a criminal.

I think it is a slippery slope. While I don’t care what they do to these guys for their sake, I think making it a no tolerance executable offense would only lead these to make damn sure that they kill whomever they rape or who witnesses the act. That kind of rationalization is scary.

I think castration, public castration, would be good. Let these guys walk the streets as eunnuchs wearing sari’s for the rest of their lives. Who’s with me? Probably not western feminists…

yeah…that is a line of thinking but indian penal code has not gone there before…amputating/castration/stoning seems regressive…

but when emotions run high there is little to suggest otherwise

@ ohai

you serious?

reports say that india contributed 25% of the worlds GDP before the british turned up.

last year an underground vault was found in a kerela temple.the estimated worth was 22 billion.it contained jewels from napoleon’s era.

even when the british left there was a person called the nizam of hyderbad.google him.there was wealth in this land a lot of it.it’s what attracted the british.

@ CT

that’s not what i meant and you know it.

indian culture is resiliant.we owe that to hinduism.but you said it’s unchanged.it has morphed/evolved continuously.

indian communites abroad might be indian through a westerner’s eyes, not to an indians.we have zilch in common with malaysian ,carribean and fijian indians.

i don’t call this place hindustan.im not a hindu nationalist.but we are not the same people.what does a punjabi have in common with a tamil?cricket and bollywood maybe thats it.though you’d be hard pressed to find a tamil who watches bollywood.

we have different customs, different blood and it’s great that we’re learning to get along and pull in the same direction but we are not the same people.not yet at least.

being indian is not analogous to being american,it is analogous to being white.

I’m absolutely with you.

CT, how much did you get from Spielberg to base Temple of Doom off you?

Ignore him, he’s a troll. He has a habit of stating his opinion as incontrovertible fact, and noting any disagreement as “foolish”.

isildurr - just curious, have u crossed ur teens?

^

nicely done and yes.

look i dont really care.i identify myself as an indian but there are tons and tons of people who identify their state first then their country,

if something i said bothers you open your mouth and say it.

if you don’t have the time or think it’s beneath you fuck off

What? Because I said that more Indians were starving 1000 years ago than today? How is this not a reasonable thing to believe? To oppose this statement would be like saying that Indians have made no socioeconomic gains in 1000 years.

Oh no, we’ve had this british raj argument before, let’s not go there. Comparing the GDP of countries before the industrial era is a pretty loaded statement. Before the industrial revoultion the whole world was a pretty backwards place almost exclusively made up of farmers with a very few wealthy kings and what not ruling over them. How many times have our economies compounded since the industrial revolution? I bet the state of wyoming today probably has a larger GDP than India did 300 years ago with its 25 percent gdp share.

I’d wager that my relatives 500 years ago probably lived similar lives to Indians 500 years ago. The difference was that europe had a renaissance followed by an enlightenment followed by an industrial revolution. Those things just did not happen anywhere in Asia regardless of whether or not the brits were there or not. Take Thailand as an example.

Also the idea of a temple hoarding 22 billion dollars of gold and jewels for a hundred years (maybe a thousand) doesn’t help the argument that Indians somehow magically became cheap the moment the English showed up.

Also, I started this by saying IN BOLD LETTERS that these are generalisations. Yep, you can show me Indian jews or even Indian blacks, blue eyed kashmiris, christians, muslims, etc. There is lots of diversity in India. But on the other hand, we are talking about your average Indian. I think we all know more or less what kind of person that is.

@CT: Foreign nationals are not allowed to buy land in India thus please dont bother to sell the land you have bought.

I know you will think your way out of it

Also, you should note that those jewels were probably owned by a handful of guys. Normal people had little access to that wealth. Wealth distribution is an important consideration, in addition to absolute values of societal wealth.

Furthermore, I don’t see how this number compares favorably to today’s India. If you add up the net worth of all Indians today, you will get some huge, huge number.
