Deloitte Job Offer

Hi guys I got an offer from Deloitte Tax services to work as Analyst/Consultant. I have 11 months work experience as Corporate Finance Analyst. I am a Level 1 candidate (Dec 2009) waiting for result. Though I am not very happy with the job profile ( they are saying they will give 4 weeks training and then place me with a suitable team ) but my present profile is also ain’t great. I am getting 30% salary hike here. What do you guys think I should join Deloitte (Brand name) or continue working with my present employee and finish my level 2 here and then lookout for an equity research job.

Hmm…11 months seems to be on the short side but the benefits clearly outweigh the costs. What exactly will you be doing at Deloitte? Does it count as relevant CFA experience?

Different tax services provided by Deloitte are - Lead Tax, Multistate Tax, Private Client Advisory, Global Employment Services, International Tax, M&A, Transfer Pricing, Washington National Tax. Most probably I ll land up in International Tax, Corporate Tax or Transfer Pricing as per hr and I think it count as relevant experience.

I’m not too sure if it counts. I know audit does. The brand name could help you get into a top MBA program to get into ER though. Good luck studying for the CFA while working those busy seasons though.

Not all audit counts. Only auditing that relates to the investment decision. (Ex. counting inventory would not count.)

If you want to get into research, not sure how doing taxes gets you there.

I work in tax for Deloitte as a consultant. In my time there, I have had the chance to meet a lot of interesting people (including ex-traders, financial engineers, and a lot of economists). If you want my advice, I wouldn’t listen to the guy who says that tax won’t get you anywhere. For a 30% salary hike, you could easily land a transfer pricing position where your experience (if well described) could easily be accepted for the CFA (as it’s mostly economist who work in that group) and benefit from the strong brand name of the firm if you ever wish to move. IMHO, Deloitte will also provide you with a lot more exit opportunities than a lot of firms (I can’t say anything about your current firm as I don’t know anything about it…) Anyway, this is my opinion (and advice) from what i’ve read from your post. Good luck to you in you future endeavors (whatever path your should choose). J. @ QuantJockMba, if you read this post, I’ve received your last email and will try to contact you. I know I haven’t been really quick to answer and am sorry about that. I will try to write in the upcoming days / weeks…

I don’t think anyone said it wouldn’t get him anywhere, just that it wouldn’t move him closer to ER.

I have accepted the offer. I am 24 years old and I think I can take risk now. With the brand of Deloitte, CFA Level 1 ( Hopefully ) and a good Gmat score will get me to a good MBA or MIF course and then to ER.

^ Congrats man! I think you did the right thing. Keep your goals clear.

Amit_a, Shoot me an email at julien_hebng at hotmail.com You’re pretty much in the same position as I am. We’ll talk. J.

Amit Ji. what’s your GMAT score?

Why didn’t you apply to the division more relevant to ER? such as corporate finance advisory? That way I think you will learn a lot more on financial modelling and the valuation skills required for ER.

Best of luck.

Iginla2010, Thanks Man. J. I’m in my office so can’t access my mail right now. Will shoot it by afternoon. Swapation Gamma Ji, I’ve started preparing I haven’t appeared for Gmat. FutureIBanker, In current hiring scenario ( & in the firm like Deloitte ) it’s not about your choice, it’s about what your employer wants to offer.

If you have no other offers, or even potentials, take it. I did an internship in Deloitte Tax (Australia) and never once heard of any exit opps for seniors and above other than working for an internal tax dept of a large corporate. I don’t see how tax consulting can give you any transferable skills outside the tax industry.

@UgradCFA, I agree that at the senior levels, exit opportunities are scarce. But at 24, the guy could easily work transfer pricing, network with the partners in transaction services or corp fi, and quickly move there within a short time span. At least that’s what I plan to do. Depending on what you do in your dept, you could also build up a good story for Ibanking interviews and all (I know how I can spin this my way). Deloitte as all kinds of employee career switch programs / rotation programs / … so without another offer in sight, i think it is wise to accept it. J.

Congrats, Amit! I think you are on a good track.

Without another offer in site it is definitely wise to accept, but try and keep up to date with non-tax related things - show that you are keen to break into finance by building up skills in that area. I don’t mean just the CFA, I mean learning to model, maintaining a stock portfolio etc. I think a transfer to corp fin is a slim chance - if you office is anything like mine was, every one wants to work in corp fin and they have more than enough people with relevant experience to fill that job. The ability to network w/ corp fin partners was almost non existent, maybe I nor any one I met hadn’t figured out how to do it though. A couple of the grads had managed to get a secondment into corp fin but they worked in M&A tax. Try that perhaps? Transfer pricing…hmm my impression was it was a narrow field but atleast it involves more finance-type work than the other divisions. Best of luck
