Difference between mocks and real exam

Congratulations to everyone who passed the exam and dont despair of failing it. During preparation to level II I used to run around 12 mocks and Schweser practice exams, and in average I scored 63% with 3% st. deviation. After looking through some topics at this forum in May I saw that a lot of guys score 75-77%, so I wasnt so sure of passing level II as I was 6 months ago when I was taking level I exam. Yesterday I found that I hopefully passed the exam and on 7 blocks I scored more than 70%. So, just for statistics it`s very interesting how much did you score on mocks and your result on the real exam.

I did much better on the real exam, probably because Scheweser mocks are usually harder. If someone’s scoring nearing 80% on those mocks they need to get a life!

I also find mocks pretty hard, after several mocks I achived not less than 90% in Q-bank practice exams (40-60 questions).

My scores on mocks ranged from 80% to 90%. On the actual exam, I got >70 in everything except for Quant. Idk what happened but I thought my quant went really well. May be I got tricked and fell for traps. Anyways, I am still happy.

Mock 1 (CFAI 2009): 80%

Mock 2 (CFAI 2010): 88%

Mock 3 (CFAI 2011): 81%

Mock 4 (CFAI 2012): 90%

Mock 5 (CFAI 2013): 83%

I did not do CFAI 2014 mock because it was almost a replica of earlier mocks.

The CFAI work very hard to ensure that the actual exam paper is quite different to everything you’ve seen before. I don’t mean that they’re deliberatly making up obscure questions (maybe for a small % of the exam) but they’re not going to ask you a straight up H model question you’ve done 100 times on q bank, EOC and schweser exams, they’re going to twist it a bit and throw in something else as well, one of the inputs might be missing or you might need to pull it out of something else in the vignette.

ethics is a great example, they write questions to make you make a judgement call on a brand new scenario.

I got >70 in every section.

I did four CFAI mocks, and all of them were around 70%.

This was my first attempt at lvl 2 and ended up passing somehow.

I only did 3 mocks, never got >70 on any one: I believe my scores were something like 64/66/68

Ended up getting the following matrix: <50 Econ/PM, 51-70: Quant/Corp Fin and >70 in everything else.

I found the mocks to be a little harder than the actual exam. I know many people were commenting about the tricks and traps on the actual exam and I wasn’t sure if I fell into those or not. I know that I must have bombed the PM section anyway after coming out of that, lol.

I personally thought that the actual exam was definitely trickier than the mocks. No mock had accurately captured the amount of trickiness (for eg, spurious information was never provided in any mocks). The mocks were more to the point, know the formulas and solve the problem type questions. I felt the actual was more using your own brain too - to actually sift out the relevant from spurious.

The 2014 CFAI mock exams were decent indicators of success on the real thing for me. I scored 73% and 75% on the two CFAI mocks two weeks before the real exam and my estimated 40/60/80 score was 74% on the June 7th exam.

I found the most challenging mocks, without question, to be Elan mocks. They were substantially more difficult than Schweser and CFAI mocks. They actually kind of pissed me off taking them they were so difficult. The 2013 CFAI mock was also very difficult. I wasn’t able to hit the 70% mark on any of those mocks, but on Schweser mocks it was a lot easier.

That’s great, man.

Quant took away the bragging rights from me. Fk it.

Did you do the CFAI 2013 mock? If yes, what was your score? For me, it was brutal. Made me disappointed after scoring 90% in the last mock.

2013 CFAI mock ate my brain.

I looked at Schweser mocks but they did seem to be that hard so I decided not to take them at all.
