Differential Equations

This class is ridiculously hard. Haven’t taken calc since multivariable freshman year. Anyone agree with this? I also have a mid term coming up soon can anyone give me some good resources for study tools? teacher is horrendous and is russian.

Aren’t you a senior? Differential equations are pretty much useless unless you’re going to follow up with a more advanced class.

any suggestions for sources?

Not sure about sources… this isn’t exactly general interest for most people. How would you normally handle a difficult class? I imagine it would involve going to office hours a lot and reading the text book many times.

Take your prof a bottle of Stoli.

I can’t believe you put yourself in this situation during your last semester of college.

I took differential equations and a course on math proofs (discrete structures). i found them very difficult. needless to say, i can’t remember a thing about it and found them completely useless. i would have taken more history courses if i had the chance to do it again. mathematics in the social sciences are overrated. Just read various textbooks if you have trouble with the stuff. sometimes, an author can present the ideas in a more intuitive way. that’s what I did.

Diff. Eq… isn’t rediculously hard! Might be in comparison to pretty much in undergrad finance class… If you’re asking now for sources… you’re probably screwed. Find a forum for the GRE Math subject test… what ever book they recommend for the couple Diff Eq questions is probably adequate. Good luck.

Try this: http://www.amazon.com/Schaums-Outline-Differential-Equations-Richard/dp/0070080194 If you still don’t get it drop the course, you will not find an easier exposition.

Try the MIT resources ( tutorials/videos, …) also I believe there is a Video Professor somewhere for free. If all fails, you can pay me and I’ll do your homeworks for you and help you with your mid-term preparation ( I’m assuming that you’re not stupid off-course :).

Try physicsforum or quantnet

Don’t russian kids master differential equations in 4th grade or something?

if that was my second semester senior year, i’d be taking intro to golf or snowboarding 101 dude (unless is earlier than 10 am class)

MIT has lecture videos online for free of their Differential Equations course. The course is 18.03 in the math department.

Just be thankful you are taking it at a private school that isnt an engineering mecca. I took Diff eqs at Berkeley 2nd semester senior year to get into grad econ work and barely got out alive. 5 days a week and tons of engineering lower division students hoping to get into upper division departments.

Well, I can’t say I’m surprised that a finance student finds diffEQ “ridiculously hard” given that undergrad finance is a joke. I imagine the average IQ of a finance major isn’t very high. DiffEQ certainly isn’t easy by any means - but it’s far from “ridiculously hard.” It’s actually pretty straight forward once you get the hang of it. You want ridiculously hard? Take Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, or 4th dimensional Topology.

I sometimes wonder how much math is actually productive for securities analysis and trading. Sometimes it takes an old timer to look at the market and just realize thats its all BS no matter what the models say. Like Buffet.
