Occasionally, a reminder needs to be posted for the board. This is a statement about mutual respect for other candidates. However using racial slugs against each other is clearly crossing the professional line and shows a total lack of class. We are all pretty competitive people but we don’t need to go that low. I would like to think most people here are pretty well educated and have worked with other diverse groups of people before, hopefully most people have had some diversity training along the way in this very global financial industry. Bigger shops tend to do a better job at this b/c they recognize staying on top requires a diverse group of employees to generate ideas and profits. People need to work together through differences while maintaining respect. Sometimes people who never had to deal with stereotypes, indirect racism or blunt racism don’t understand why people who do deal with it in their regular lives get sensitive to it. We get sensitive sometimes b/c it brings back memories of crapp that happen before that shouldn’t have. Plus if nothing gets said ignorant people will think it’s ok to continue. I’m sensitive to it, it offends me even if it’s not my ethnic group when shitty statements are made by people who know better and are held to a higher professional standard. Most people here are very respectful of others. Please continue to bear in mind, even if you get mad or pissy, try to cruse, name call, tell stories, without biases toward race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age and whatever else, you know the drill. It will keep AF a great place for discussing financial madness where everybody can contribute and learn free from unnecessary BS. Thanks for reading.

You’re a true profession, good for you! There have been studies to show that firms with diversity are more profitable that plain vanilla cookie jar cutter shops, attract more talent and grow. Look it up if you like but some people do just do things for fear of legal liabilities. Like I said people who never experienced it think it’s nothing and mostly believe it’s not worth talking about b/c they don’t want to deal with it. The world is far from an ideal but people should pursue what is fair and just and not give up b/c it’s a f-en mess. If progress was not made, we would still have slavery, racial genocide [some people say this is still happening in eastern Europe, Afghanistan, formerly Burma] but why contribute even on a smaller scale in people hating?
you are a rent-seeker…diversity exists for ppl who don’t look through the glasses of “we” and “they”… I wasn’t around, and frankly I don’t care what happened hundreds of years ago, or even fifty years ago…it’s all very sad, many mistakes were made. You weren’t around either, and nobody owes you anything…if somebody doesn’t like your face, then let it be their problem…start generalizing about why that person doesn’t like your face…and expect to have ppl generalize back…
Gotta grow a thicker skin.
Can’t we change the subject to something more pleasant?
DB is helping you toughen up. Just click ‘hide posts’ from users you don’t like, and stop taking up bandwidth with your whining.
I have very thick skin, I made the statement in hope that people will think twice about what they say before they say it b/c not everybody has thick skin and people do get hurt being marginalized for non merit reasons. What should be said is that insensitive people should grown thinner skin and have some compassion for other people’s different life experiences. We all bring different ideas, values and perspective to the table. Marginalizing people from biases is just rude, unprofessional and disrespectful period. History tends to repeat itself if people don’t learn from them. It’s like we keep having bubbles and financial crisis b/c all the younger people don’t remember having stock market crashes and can’t imagine it happening again. Who wants to bet that most of the SWAP traders are in their 30’s ? Most people actually like my face pretty well…never had a problem with that. I count it as an asset in my personal life and professionally life;) Men are smucks. It is an unpleasant topic but it’s a reality. I can name you some State Legislatures who are bigoted dumpasses and one with ties to a white supremacy groups who is in office right now. Not to mention profiling of Hispanic people in Arizona and else where from ICE and 287g. I’m worked on cased where tenure was denied b/c a committee member said “there are too many Chinese in the Chemistry department” at a big university or another teacher was wrongly fired b/c of race & age discrimination. Both won their cases recently. You don’t have to go back 100 years, it’s right here right now. I used to think society was beyond all this but if you spend enough time on the non-profit space dealing with equal access [i.e healthcare access], discrimination, hate crimes [ie. police brutality, my friend was working on this case: the officer beat the living daylight out of an old minority man when he had a heart condition], you think differently and hope people will dig a little deeper, keep an open mind to what’s right and wrong, fair and not and stand up for people when you see shitt happen. Nobody is looking for a handout, just a level playing field. I’ve earned everything I got, every job I had, by having more qualifications than the next person. Sometimes I think if I was a white guy, I wouldn’t have to work as hard to make it clearly obvious that I kick asss. [but obviously not on L2 LOL]
What’s worse: racism or sexism?
Being as the majority of people enrolled in the CFA program are males, I don’t think sexism even crosses our mind. Thus, that question should expect heavy bias in its’ answers.
Nep-hi…I don’t have the time or the patience to tell you where you are wrong in your diatribe. I’m sure that government offices, and large companies everywhere are full of ppl like you…it’s truly sad…instead of focusing on how to make things better, you focus on how you were wronged… Whites are often immigrants too…The Irish and Italians didn’t exactly have a road paved with gold…2 long wars were fought between “white guys” in Europe…the road is bumpy for everyone… …you definitely have VERY thin skin…thinking others don’t work hard, and that you are at some disadvantage… low/sad

Tell you guys a funny story, when I was studying for CAIA, I magically had a check come in from good old Morgan Stanley, for what you ask? It was a class settlement payout for Morgan’s sexism while I was there so many years ago. It was hilarious. This is why manager need to be careful who they hire so they don’t hire people who end up costing the firm multi-millions for stupid stuff. I don’t know what’s worst but I think sexism is easier to overcome than racism. But population wise, half the world is female so sexism would impact more people but then there are more races of people too… no idea…
I’d say autism is the worst of the three

I like to live in your world where these racial/discriminatory problems don’t exist, ignorance is bliss sometimes. Did you know Obama and his family had to have Secret Service service protection very very early in this run for President b/c there are racist people out there who want to kill him b/c they don’t want a black President? You don’t seem to believe people experience very difficult situations b/c of real racism and other types of discrimination so I gave you some recent real life examples that I’ve been involved with from my non-profit volunteer work–my second hobby besides the CFA madness. Yes “white guys” have had problems too, if you go to Chicago, Eastern European [ie. Polish] immigrants are still look down on by the Western Europeans [ie Brits]. I’ve learn that even people who have been historically mistreated still turn around and be racist to other groups. For instance African Americans like to take jabs at Asian Americans but now they have turn to saying the Hispanic Americans are taking all their jobs and are responsible for their plight. And Asians are still racist to each other as many are still uneducated and stupid. At the same time America was built on the backs of immigrants but look at the current anti-immigrant environment. People forget where they came from. The only non-immigrant in the US are the Native Americans. People are in financial distress now and feel the need to find an escape goat for their problems, it’s most popular to blame the weakest immigrants. Not much different from how Hitler came to power blaming the Jew for Germany’s recession. See how history comes back, slightly altered? When I started in this industry my good buddy who has been in it for 30ys now said to me “Nephi, you are not going to make it, you’re 1 a woman, 2 a minority, 3 young” but I’m still here and still riding the bull! The whole reason why I brought this up is to hope future CFA industry leaders and professionals [you guys] will be aware of these issues and stand up for shitt if you see things go down. Great leaders have great people skills; they don’t belittle people. The good ole boy club has changed a little but much still needs to be done in corporate America. Other countries may have more ways to go but the road must be traveled by all to fully optimize human capital without biases. Tough order? yes. I consider myself a very fortunate and lucky person but not everybody has that. If I didn’t care about the future, I would just scratch my own back and let the financial industry breed more male shovenists, culturally insensitive assholes who offend women, their future co-workers and their clients as long as I get paid. Thank goodness most people here are not like that. db_4life, I like to take you to the Department of Justice meeting this Sat and the Advancing Justice Conference in Washington D.C. end of June, you will learn a lot like I have over the 6 years listening to field experts on public policy, studies, personal cases, advocacy plans, etc. It’s a dog eat dog world, if you let people take advantage of you for whatever reason, beyond all this, the somebody will. Don’t be shy, don’t be a wuss, always know who you are, have confidence in that and you will overcome whatever challenges life gives you. The End, that was really long, sorry guys, I don’t have to study now…hahaha
Gee…are you writing a book about this?
Reggie Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I’d say autism is the worst of the three Autism is bad too, an executive director of another children non-profit told me to stop calling stupid annoying people “retards” b/c it hurts the people who have mental or physical disabilities. They just want to be accepted and not be an insult used on others. Must be so hard to have autistic children, saw a special once, the parents are miserable constantly worrying.
