I am biased against it so I don’t answer it whenever I can. I don’t like the idea of them going “oh he’s a male, he’s white, he’s not handicapped” we got enough of those. But of course I could be assuming incorrectly. But as soon as I see “we favor the following” and they make you select your gender and ethnicity, I cringe.
Does anyone else leave it blank?
Ladies: Do you find it helps to specify your gender?
For a while I would just put “prefer not to answer”. Turns out I wound up in an office that is 75% white men anyway. Those of us that aren’t white men are our white female admins.
But in all seriousness, my office has blacks, indians, hispanics, etc. so I don’t think it really matters. Perhaps just demographically I think the people who work in these jobs are just predominantly white men in my area.
I don’t really think it matters what you put since if you lie, they’ll realize it when and if they bring you in for an interview. I’d probably keep putting prefer not to answer. If they trend towards specific people that will come out when they meet you in person.
