Don Sterling

I agree with this. I also agree with what Mark Cuban said about the situation. So Sterling is a crazy old racist dude? Who really cares? I don’t and I doubt most people do. In a week this whole thing is likely to be forgotten about.

Unless i heard the wrong video, i think his punishment is far too harsh. It was a private conversation and he was clearly emotional. Also, how is legal to fine him?

The NBA can do whatever the F they want I guess.

^ Yup. This would certainly qualify for Mind of Mencia’s “Why the Fxck is this News?” An old rich jewish white guy doesn’t take kindly to negros (he never did drop a hard N or other slur).

Whoa, back the truck up, let’s get Dan Rather to blow the lid off of this breaking development!

I have to assume that the agreement between the owners includes provisions for stuff like that.

Racist

It’s in Sterling’s best interest to sell. He bought it for $12 million 30 years ago and it’s now worth $600 million. If he keeps the team, the value will drop. Sponsors are dropping like flies, free agents will not sign and fans will boycott. The more he stays in the public spotlight over this controversy, the more it will hurt his other business ventures.

I doubt NBA fining Sterling has anything to do with the law. More like a policy breach.

Speaking of legal - how do they allow monopolies like the NBA, the NFL and so on? They might be private entities but they must hold > 90% market share by revenue for basketball games, football games etc.

Players will pretend to care for the rest of the season. When push comes to shove though, all they really care about is the money. If the Clippers offer max contracts, players will sign there. That being said, the numbers now being thrown around for a sale of the team are insane and if he’s any kind of business man at all, he’ll sell now while the league is dying to get rid of him. Forbes had the team valued at $575MM and expectations are that offers will approach $1B.

It’s funny when he says it though.

NPR covered the case law before this was released. The lawyers said that forcing him to sell the team would probably cause a legal battle:

A fine"may be seen as the weak penalty," McCann says, “because Donald Sterling is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.9 billion.”

A suspension"would be a bolder step," McCann says. “It’s one that the NBA hasn’t taken but it’s one that I think many people would find to be justified, especially his own players who are clearly upset by the remarks that he allegedly made.”

An expulsion would mean that Sterling “would likely sue the NBA for breach of contract, his franchise agreement and potentially an antitrust claim,” McCann says.

Eh, let the old man hate who he wants to hate while cheating on his wife with a half-black transvestite looking creature. Going to die soon anyway.

My roommate actually got angry at me because I said I don’t think he would be forced to sell. I guess you need 3/4 of the owners to vote yes to kick him out. I just don’t see it happening - especially if it’s anonymous voting or there are non-disclosures. I assume it would be a private matter. I just imagine that a bunch of other older rich guys mostly care, but not enough to kick him out and set the precedent that any of them could go anytime. The fact his gf was actively trying to get him makes it a more difficult matter.

^ I disagree. I think the other owners will vote him out and it will be unanimous because no owner will want to risk it not passing and have it come out that he was one of the owners who voted to keep him. Anonymous votes never stay anonymous when the result is not what people want.

How does “forced selling” work, anyway? What if he refuses? Do they forcibly deposit $500 million in his bank account and say “shut up and take the money!!”?

^ I’m guessing that there is a set process in the franchise agreement.

^Can he still offer his courtside seat to Cliven Bundy or Riley Cooper?

Earvin Johnson will be sitting in those seats next season.

Take note as to which political party they belong to. Maybe we can use our CFA skills to do a correlation analysis in Excel. The issue to be explored is whether race and poltical party serve as predictors of racist comments.

What would the null hypothesis on that be?

Let’s not.

There is not point pretending to analyze a question when someone has already decided on the answer, wouldn’t you say?
