How many engineers out there are writing CFA exam without having formal finance / economics / accounting background?
well I am writing with Math/stats and a bit of econ background

Hello swaptiongamma, how are you going to fulfill the 4 years experience requirement? Do you work for finance company?
Was Mech Eng. Passed all 3.
kevin0118 did CFA help you to transition into finance sector. Recently I heard from a PhD economics person that those who are not from economics / finance / accounting background face tough time to enter finance industry even if they clear all 3 CFA levels. He especially mentioned many s/w engineers face problems. Anybody has any such experience?

Yes, For the past 3+ years I have been working as a software consultant in financial firms (NYC). I think they might just accept my experience as relevant.
like for murex or openlink…?

At this point, I think CFA is icing on the cake for people who are already working in finance and will not add too much credibility to career switchers (why employ a software eng. who passed CFA 3 when I can employ an MBA/CFA with job experience that are flooding the job market). Keep in mind that “finance” industry is very broad in nature and you have to refine your career goals. From what I heard, quant. finance still recruit people w/ science/math/engineering backgrounds.
I’m a chemical eng’g grad… but the winds blew me to finance work…

Eng Physics, studying for L2, work as quant and we’re all mathematicians or engineers in my department. Hopefully the CFA will open different doors in the future than the pure technical ones I have currently.
An software engineer too here writing L1 in June-2010 working as IT Consultant banking sector though not Financial sector. Anyone studying for same can contact me at gabajaj@gmail.com.

I am an engineer .I cleared my l1 in june 2009 .I then decided to switch my career into finance.BUt with just l1 and without MBA it is hard to enter.I feel some recrutiers are so dumb …They are ready to take guys with no experience and have ordinary finance degree but not guys who have worked hard to clear there CFA levels. They even does not give a chance to prove our knowledge .I feel still we have to do somethnig different apart from this CFA alone .I have visited one mnc ompany but all they said is " yes we are recrutiting people who have cleared l1 but they shoudl have Bcom or MBA " along with it??? so do we need to spend some more time and money on MBA ???Friends kindly share your views too
I got into finance via an entry level quant position. Hopefully I can use the charter as leverage for different areas in finance. Have you been looking at quant jobs?

Don’t compare CFA Level I to be better than an undergrad in finance, but its NOT.
I come from engineering background. BSc Math/Computer Science plus Msc Management
It’s the opposite. I started in engineering and math (finished some of the math!) but then got my degree in finance. Most PHd’s I know started out with one or two engineering degrees before getting into finance heavy, and from just about anyone I’ve heard any position in high finance is much better suited twoards an engineer. Recruiters love engineers because their freakin smart! Finance is a great degree and great prep for the CFA, but it doesn’t even remotely compare to and engineering or math degree in difficulty. It’s nice knowing that you took classes back in college that were far more challenging (by themselsves not as a comprehensive exam!) that any one topic on the CFA exams.
