finance jobs = long hours?

I’m just curious about the average work hour for “finance” jobs. I know finance is a very broad term, but from what i’ve heard, “finance” jobs require long hours. But as to the actual work-load I can’t grasp. The corporate finance team at my comp has 4 people, and one of the guy told me that he’s “never been worked so hard in his life.” But theres only 4 people for a sizable company that has 9-10 plants so I can see why he’s so busy. On the other hand, my brother just started at a french bank doing CDO stuff. He says he has nothing to do and just chill all day but work 10-12 hours aday. So im curious to what the norm of working hour/work load is for different roles of finance. Thanks for any input.
