Please don’t come into my office on March 26 and tell me, “Here is a giant box full of papers and other shit. Please have my taxes done by April 15. No, I don’t want to pay more than $200 and no, I don’t want to file an extension.”

This goes triple if you’re a new client and your old CPA is turning you away because he can’t finish your stuff by April 15. Neither can I. Either let me file an extension and do your stuff in June or go F yourself.

Do what I’ve done. Charge a retainer fee up front. Large one, like $1,000. See if he’s serious.
