FRM part 1 May 2013 vs FRM part 1 Nov 2013

FRM part 1 May 2013 and FRM part 1 Nov 2013

Is the syllabus the same?

Any difference in term of syllabus between these 2 exams?

No changes - material is updated each calender year.

hi…i plan to take the november 2013 level 1 exam, are garp notes enough to prepare for the exam? or are notes from providers like kaplan needed to crack the exam?

Lalitha, it depends on what your background is. Do you have a CFA Charter or a Master’s level degree in finance of any kind? A strong math background? Then you can probably get by on the GARP materials alone. If not, I would highly recommend going with a provider like Schweser or BT.

Regardless of your background, I personally feel the value in going with a third-party provider’s material is the large amount of questions/practice exams that they provide. IMO, the source material does not contain enough practice questions to give a candidate a good degree of confidence to sit for this exam.

destroyer of worlds, although i do not have CFA charter, but i do hold a certificate in risk Management, and have studied risk management as part of the certificate

even i feel the practice exams tht the third party providers provide are essential, however are garp notes (just the reading material) enough for the exam.

I see. Well, what I would say is that the GARP notes are much more cumbersome to read through. The job of Schweser, Bionic Turtle, etc. is to “boil down” the concepts and calculations such that a candidate can absorb an enormous amount of material in a short amount of time.

If you have the time and enjoy the learning experience, I would say go with the original material. If you don’t want to risk not passing the exam, pick up a third-party provider’s material. If you wanted to pair the GARP source readings with a third party provider’s question bank and/or practice exams, I suppose that would be a good option if that is what you’re asking (though I have not done this for any of my professional designations myself).

My preferred approach is let the professionals at Schweser/BT/etc. do the boil down work, I enjoy reading the explanations in their study guides, and, at my leisure and when time permits, if a topic intrigues me enough, I will then independently seek out the source material for a deeper read. This method has enabled me to have much success with the CFA and CAIA exams, and Part I of the FRM so far.

Hope this helps, good luck.

helpful indeed…thks a lot for the detailed advice
