2nd episode was better but still not that great for me. People raving about the action packed final scenes but apart from the Theon bit i wasn’t impressed with it either. At the time I was willing him to intervene and save the day/die with honour but in hindsight it was the fitting reaction for this character.
Euron just seems ridiculous and the sand snakes were awful characters.
One thing that comes to mind is that great big sprawling stories never really end in a satisfying way (see Lost) as you end up getting used to seasons and seasons of the plot expanding, more people being introduced, more tangents, more unexpected turns so then when it starts to focus in it becomes too mechanic as they try to tie up all the strands. That’s why Breaking Bad was the best TV show ever for me. It was finite as a function of the central plot, it didn’t meander or expand too far.
Euron just really bothers me. He is the one character that is not at all how he is described in the book. In the book, he has one eye, bluish lips, he has a dragon horn that can control dragons, he’s super evil, lies constantly, etc. This guy seems soft by comparison, and the matrix themed attire isn’t helping. He’s basically just a new one dimensional villain to replace Ramsay, as far as I can tell.
Things happen so fast in episodes 2 and 3. In previous seasons Jon Snow would say “I’m going to Dragonstone!” and then the rest of the season would be about him going to Dragonstone. In this season, he is there in the first scene of the next episode. I like the action. I just hope they don’t lose character development along the way.
I like the Lannister switcheroo with their army, but I’m not sure I love the direction they are going with Dany. Basically, she shows up super powerful and now they need to weaken her so that it is a real contest between her and Cersei, which is why they destroyed Dany’s navy, her links to Dorne and Highgarten, and stranded the unsullied on the other side of Westeros. Now she is left with only the Dothraki. If they included the dragon horn in the plot then that would have been unnecessary, but maybe that was judged too high fantasy for the show or something. Maybe I’m nitpicking, but it seems a little transparent.
I wonder if Bronn and Tyrion meet at some point on opposing sides.
