My lil cous is interested. I pointed him to www.wallstreetoasis.com as I don’t know better. Is there a traditional path to achieve this? Do all the IBs have a recruitment rounds on campus? Is there a deadline to get in? I think it is a long shot as he is not (to my knowledge) in a top tier uni, so any pointers appreciated.
Tell him to apply online/try and get the number of an HR person. Wall Street Oasis is a buch of morons. AMIRIGHT?
Yeah, WSO would be his best bet. Pretty sure summer analyst recruiting for IB starts up in November. I could be wrong about this. m
Is he going to school in the UK? If he is not at a top tier uni it is very difficult in the UK, probably harder even than in the States. My family is from the UK originally and I still have a lot of family over there – when I was first looking at getting into finance I thought about trying to leverage some connections and get a job at a UK firm but it is nearly impossible without having gone to OxBridge or a handful of other unis. WSO is a bunch of morons bashing each other about who got a better internship or whatever. It’s not that helpful. You might point him toward the Vault guides (like $20 or something), but I don’t know if they have UK specific info. in them – process should be the same though whether it’s in the States or in the UK though. Basically, go to a good school, get in the recruiting channel at the right time, ace the interview, and you’re in. If you deviate from that system, good luck.
Yeah, not a great school either - Glasgow/Business Economics. He just shot me a mail about an IB internship here but we are not IB. I know he is not in a great position and am trying to help him help himself. I’ve asked to see what his electives are to at least get with the programme. I know people who have done more with less, so there is obviously hope and he is still early in the game. I think WSO is probably exactly that, but at least he can ask questions and get a bit more realistic when his expectations get shot down (better coming from that bunch of morons than his moron cousin…)
Got any family friends? That’s how most of us are where we are.
Even grads from the elite schools are having trouble landing IB jobs. Sorry, if he isn’t coming from a top school and doesn’t have relevant experience, and doesn’t have a very close friend/relative already in, his chances for IB are basically none. In the US, the summer internships applications start late fall semester and interviews kick in early spring semester. Full time recruiting is heavy in the fall, which is about right now.
