Going straight to L2 Jun 10 after L1 Dec09

The CFAI states that a candidate can only register for L2 Jun 10 exam after L1 Dec 09 exam results are released (around end Jan 10). If I am only able to register at the end of Jan 10, I will only receive the CAFI curriculum in Feb 10. That leaves only about 4 months to study and revise before the exam. It seems that my plan to complete two exams in one year may not be realistic I have read on the forum and the CFAI website that quite a number of candidates and chartholders have done this. Can anyone share their experience how they did L1 (Dec) and L2 (Jun) consecutively? How do you get around receiving the cirruculum only 4 months before exam?

many people have done it. 4 months are enough for L2.

I was asking the same thing after I took L1. Yea many people here did it, but we are waiting for the scores so you might want to ask on L3 now or after August 18th. I think it’s very possible and honestly easier, since you don’t get out of that study mode and remember many concepts that are being built on in L2. Also you don’t have to wait till February, CFA has first study session in PDF for free, and you can buy one or two study books from Schweser or Stalla, or pick up used ones since materials don’t change that much. I’d highly recommend this route unless you know you won’t have 10-20 hours a week to study. If you don’t pass the only loss is 700 bux, you would be in the same boat time wise as if you just wait. This way you will have a very good taste of L2 even if you don’t have enough time to study and do fail.

very doable. I passed L1 in December and even though I havent recieved my scores back for L2, I know if I fail it wont have been because I didnt have enough time.

agree w/ egomez83, definitely doable plus you have all of L1 relatively fresh in your mind. I passed Dec, and if I fail L2 its not b/c of lack of time.

I think this has to do with how much time you have available to study and how fast are you generally in retaining information. different people have a different pace in everything. my experience, i took L1 in Dec 08 and started studying for L2 on Feb 10th when i recieved my books from CFAI. I did not feel that I was short on time as 4 months was enough for me. However, I made sure i allocated 2-3 hours everyday in the first 3 months and 4-5 hours in the last month leading to the exam. I had 3 weeks to go over the readings and do mock and practice exams and felt ready for the exam. so before you commit, look at your schedule, ask yourself, how much time can i invest daily in studying for L2, and give your self some slack time for any unforseen delays, personal or work related. if you then feel that it is doable, go ahead and try it, you will definently not be the only one attemping this strategy. Good luck

Passed L1 in Dec’2008, Attempted L2 in June 2009 (Started studying on 1st Feb). If you read Schweser for level 2, it is possible, I don’t think reading entire CFAI curriculum and retaining it in 4 months is possible. I could not solve all CFAI EOC questions too. (did some select EOC Qs) This time I studied 100% with schweser (except ethics). I think it was sufficient.

IMHO shweser sucks. I will never buy from them again

I would argue that there may be some relative benefit to doing in that way because you dont have time between Dec. and results day to truly break the habit of studying. The main struggle I had was not with having enough time. It was avoiding burnout. And I passed both levels using only Schweser, except I did use the CFAI texts in spots for LEvel 2 as well as EOC questions. Schweser gives you enough to get it done, IMO.

I studied for L2 in 4 months right after results for L1 were released. I used Schwesser and it helped a lot. CFAI has too much fat in it. I only relied on CFAI to practice derivative questions until I was ready to shoot myself. As for whether it’s possible to do L2 in 4 months, yes I believe it’s possible. However, you’ll have to be dedicated enough to forgo having any sort of life outside of studying (assuming you are also working FT, otherwise you can afford to have a life), and also whether or not you’re the type to burn out. I totally burnt out studying for L2. I had the time, but mentally, I couldn’t assert myself in the middle of May. Lost quite a lot of precious time then, but was able to recover near the end. I hope it was enough, but we’ll see in Aug.

I am sure it is doable for some, but in my case, it was not enough time. It was not a wasted experience, however. It gave me the opportunity to sit through the exam once and see what to expect. Now I am awaiting my L2 results a year later, and am cautiously optomistic. I’ll know better on August 16. P.S. If you plan to take a review course, you can register and get study materials for the review before the results come out. I believe Stalla and Schwesser will both give you the opportunity to refund your course or switch level when the results come in. Good luck!

I thought we got our scores on August 18th

WHAT DOES IT MATTER WHEN WE GET OUR SCORES? DONT YOU KNOW I FAILED?
