They’re opening an office about 1 block from my APT. I am thinking about cold calling them and trying to secure an informational interview or maybe a lunch interview with them. Just to keep my options open. Any tips on how to approach this? Im thinking NUMI would be the MacDaddy on this sort of thing. Since it’s a new office I figure they might need to fill some space, I know they do a lot of dealing in France, since I am a French citizen it might actually help me out, though being in Miami…not so much. In any case, how should I approach this? Should I even try? I just got this job in Miami, however, I would definitely jump to H.I.G if I had the opp.
What would your potential new role be? I know HIG well and have several friends that used to work there on the buyout and distressed side. Pretty much all of their most junior hires had 2-3 years experience doing big 3 consulting or some investment bank function, mostly IBD or credit.
i have some friends in HIG as well, all came from ibanking backgrounds
New role would probably be office fluffer, or janitor. I’m in AM right now. I think working distressed would be most interesting especially considering the credit markets we’re headed into.
i have a buddy in their distressed fund out of their miami office. he came from an ibd background and most of his colleagues that i met also did as well.

PWM/AM->HIG Good luck.
sorry, but PWM is not Asset Management at a BB. Huge difference in clients, skill, duties, pay, etc. PWM - individuals Asset Management - institutional, internal funds, etc.
i would say PE > AM > PWM AM as in a fund? PWM can be awful.

PWM = retail

I couldn’t remember if he was PWM or AM. Either way that’s going to be a tough sell. The easiest path into pe is with an ibanking or consulting background with a minimum amount of work exp at the least. Most kids that aren’t directly hired into pe after their analyst stints will head to bschool so you would be competing with some real talent. I’ve seen a lot of threads, other sites, asking about the relevance of the CFA in ibanking and hedge funds. How much relevance and value does it afford someone in the pe industry?
It’s PWM but managing discretionary portfolios. Thats as simply as I can make it. In any case it’s not like im looking to jump ship, just make a few contacts, get my name out there. I need to expand my network in Miami to outside the office. My professional network that it.
Are the portfolios comprised of sub advised portfolios?

@Kimmer, gotcha. I thought they were just setting up shop here. Maybe I will try to run into some of those guys during happy hour.
HIG Ventures is right across the street from my apartment in Atlanta. The bios of their portfolio team are ridiculous. 80% of the guys went to either Harvard, Stanford, or Columbia. I don’t think an MBA from Phoenix is going to get things done.
