^Very true R is a good package, but being close to a developer at Stata I always got their latest and greatest for free, often in Beta version, and helped them to some extent with bugs, patched, and fixes, as well as pointing out any oversights or lacking functionality (this is what I really loved about this small company, they were so responsive to their users).
