I’m a pretty hard person to kill.
I have gotten hit by cars four times though. It didn’t really phase me. Three times were on a bike.
The first time was on my mountain bike. I was headed to this store that was supposed to have quality knockoff goods (some were real knockoffs, ie. created in factory after hours) in Beijing. It was only about 15 min on the bike from where I lived in Beijing (Beijing University East Gate). I was almost to the store and this crazy dude ran a light that was red for a long time. He saw me at the last minute and clipped the back tire. I did a 90 degree fishtail but didn’t lose my balance and kept riding and he floored it after he clipped me. I didn’t fall but looked over my shoulder to see him speeding away. No blood no foul and my rim wasn’t bent, so that was good. The second time was on my mountain bike as well. I was headed to the beach in Valencia, Spain and was going near full speed on my bike on these tiny side streets. There was a 2 way stop where I didn’t have to stop, but it was blind because there were buildings on all sides. I didn’t see a car approaching and he completely ran the stop sign. I T-boned him and flew over the top of the car. It was like 4 spanish dudes in the car. I think I broke one of their windows (either drivers side or windshield), but was a bit pissed they ran the sign so dusted myself off and kept riding to the beach. They wanted to talk or something. I didn’t want to talk. The third time was just ridiculous. Wasn’t even on a bike but leg was runover by minivan. Not cool, but my Vans AV6 shoes saved my ankle from being crushed.
The last time was more recent. I was on my baby (my carbon fiber madone road bike) and going pretty fast. I saw a car stopped at a stop sign. Thought it was going to remain stopped… and right when I was riding by the lady floored it and knocked me like 3 feet sideways. I’m not really sure what happened but I did some kind of roll and only scratched my elbow. My first thought was WTF. My second thought was if my rims were bent. I did a quick test spinning the front and back wheel. My rims were ok. My frame looked ok. I’m cool. Next thing I see is this lady with her car parked in the middle of the road with the door open scream crying and saying “are you ok!?” , “are you ok!!”, “i’m gonna call an ambulance!!”. I was like no. I’m leaving. She started apologizing profusely and scream crying to the point where it started to get very annoying. I had some sort of meeting and had to peace out. I didn’t have time for this nonsense. I said ‘its cool’ and just left. My baby (carbon fiber madone) was ok. I don’t care. If she broke my frame or bent my rims, I would have definitely sought compensation.
