i just finished my first pass through the Schweser material. I plan to make my own notes based on the Schweser material next and do the questions in the Schweser notes and at the back of the Schweser notes at the same time (this should take me to end September). Then I plan to re-revise and do practice exams. Please relate any thoughts you may have on my plan, positive or negative. Thanks
Looks like a decent plan to me. However, my experience was that the Schweser practice exams and Qbank for the FRM was not really reflective of the actual exam. There were too many easier questions. I remember doing the FRM practice exam two weeks before the actual exam and getting an average score of just 55%. I nearly wept! make sure you try and get some practice papers from Garp as well so that you get used to the level of difficulty they’ll be expecting.
Thanks very much Millvew for your view. Could you also tell me, if you know, whether the bionic turtle practice exams are more suitable? many thanks
Well, I’m not sure because I didn’t use them. My girlfriend did buy the Bionic Turtle stuff but she tends not to do the practice exams - she just sucks up information and goes for it when exams come about. I need to be able to do examples to absorb the info so do lots of questions. I’ll have a look, ask her what she thinks and get back to you if you like.

Wow, I didn’t have that experience with the Schweser practice exams at all. I found them to be quite difficult, on par with the actual exam (and quite good preparation for it). On a difficulty scale of 0 to 10, I’d rank the difficulties as follows: 9/10 - Actual FRM1 exam, November 2010 8/10 - Schweser FRM1 Practice Exam Book 9/10 - Schweser FRM1 Final Review Exam 6/10 - FRM1 Practice exams from GARP I agree that the questions in FRM1 Qbank are not as difficult as those on the actual exam – maybe I’d rank its difficulty around 5/10 – but I think Qbank is intended to be more of a learning-and-repetition tool than an exam simulator.
Thanks for the input everyone! Millview, yes, if you could get back to me on that I would appreciate it.
Hi Penny-wenny, I’m afraid my girlfriend wasn’t much help. I asked her about the Bionic Turtle practice exams and she couldn’t really give me much input. As I said previously, she sucks up information like a sponge so tends not to do many practice questions/exams at all. The only thing she said about it was that if you like video lessons etc, then it is much better. The downside she said was that it assumed a greater background mathematical knowledge than the Kaplan Schweser materials (not an issue for her though as she already has a maths degree.)
