How do you survive in a dog-eat-dog environment?

For those of you that work in demanding jobs - how do you survive? I remember reading from a poster that in his line of work, he has seen people doing some messed up, inhumane acts like throwing stuff, yelling / berating, etc. due to the amount of hours and stress. How do you deal with this?! and how do you not cry?! lol!

i think most people expect the worse and come to find it is not as bad as their thought. How do you deal with it? Try not to make the same mistake twice and think before you do something… And I have seen a trader cry before(it was not me)

I would LOVE to work in a more competitive “dog eat dog” environment. I feel like some times I get a little too intense when I call or talk to other people at work…Then I call the trading desks. I feel at home when I talk to those guys. No BS. Typical convo: “Trading” “Give me the market size and quote for XXX security on FTSE” “We can’t trade on the FTSE” “Do you have the info?” “Yes” “Give me the damn quote then” *give me quote* “thanks” Where as in other departments (mainly BO places that I would call to get on someones back about rushing something) they chit chat and kind of seem in no real hurry. It’s like Germany (trading desk) vs. Greece/Italy (BO).

It’s sink or swim. Most of the stress is self-imposed. Crying is not unheard of and is better than losing money. I was washing my hands a few months back when a trader barged in and puked in a toilet. This was right after the close, so probably not due to a hangover. He wasn’t there on Monday. Not everyone wants to play two-hand touch.

i get yelled at weekly. maybe once or twice a week. you just dont care after a bit. when work gets you stressed out, remember, everyones dies.

Sometimes it helps to find a husband that earns more than you.

^L O L! I’m working on it.

You don’t take it personal. You laugh along. Helps if you do not have a major fear to get canned. Then you wake up the next day, go in earlier and plan to totally kickass.

Its a Dawg eat Dawg world guys. If you are on a team and you are losing the game, expect the coach to yell at you. Listen to this and you will understand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw7KijRfU-c Its all about winning.

If you can dish it back out it makes it really fun. No, really, it does.

A reasonably well known phenomenon, discussed here colorfully: Regression to the Mean and Owning Some Chumps http://www.psychologyofgames.com/2010/03/30/regression-to-the-mean-and-owning-some-chumps/

Take a dump on your competitors desk. While he’s working.

^^^Agree with the above. Take a dump as soon as possible. This one guy in my dog-eat-dog workplace got constipated and couldn’t do it. Poor guy, he didn’t make it, rest his soul. This is some serious Hobbesian state of nature stuff we’re dealing with in the modern workplace.

Thats why you gotta load up on the way in. 5 shots of expresso and 3 apple bran muffins always works like a charm.
