The last watch I bought was at Loehman’s for $21. I bought it because the CFA exam room didn’t have clocks on the walls.
I just ask my personal assistant for the time. That’s how it’s done, dude.
Ahhh, watches. So rewarding. It’s never about the time or accuracy. Been an enthusiast for a while, and I have an Omega DeVille with a brown crocodile bracelet and a steel Breitling Navitimer. Until recently I had avoided Rolex because I hate the date lens. Everything changed when I saw this new Rolex Milgauss, so pulled the trigger last August. Since I don’t want to become like those guys in watches websites who have a double-digit inventory, I’m planning to unload the Navitimer.
If I was going for the ironic hipster look, I’d choose a Timex with Indiglo or a calculator watch. But I hate hipsters so I rock the Tag my parents gave me 18 years ago.
I was knocking watches, but love the Milgauss as well (saw an advert in Wired). Hoping for a big holiday present, but I would also feel stupid for how much it costs…wonder if there are any good knockoffs. I’m pretty frugal, but I think from not buying watches and cars my fiance and I have pretty good real estate assets (well, I do. She has a Cartier instead).
Why you guys gotta hate on my game?
Shit works. Victoria ladies love this shit.
SUK MA DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIK
A. Lange Und Sohne, you mean? hehe
Their watches are seriously balls…maybe will get one if I make partner of a mid-sized hedge fund someday
I don’t know about those. The design is inefficient, as it does not use the whole space of the dial. They are trying to be “edgy”, but it is not an elegant watch, in my opinion.
I have a high school class mate who works as a watchmaker for Lange und Soehne in Dresden’s (heavily bombed cultural city of eastern Germany) Glashuette manufactory, he used to fall asleep right in front of the teacher in philosophy class lol…his dad was a watchmaker before him…pretty awesome

^ That is a really neat skill. Great photos of the internal mechanics of the watch too.
On another note, speaking of Glashutte, would any of you consider getting a Nomos sundial pendant / ring? Cool accessory or no? Any thoughts?

New found respect for this man…
I’m not disagreeing with you Black Swan. All I’m saying is the following: A kid can grow up having picked his nose and played video games for 22 years and apply for
- A job in finance and make $100K+ a year - Yes, definitely possible.
- A job in mining and make $150K+ a year - Yup, just driving a truck up and down a mine all day.
- A job in farming and make $100K+ a year - Really? If this is so, then yeah, I stand corrected. I didn’t know this.
What you’re talking about sounds to me just like starting a business (capital investment, risk, no guaranteed income, i.e. you’re putting your neck on line) which is equivalent to what I was talking about when comparing it to owning a McD franchise. And I’m in total agreement with you that these people can make six figure salaries once they have their operation successfully running, I get it, a guy can borrow half a million dollars from the bank, buy some tractors, some seed, rent some land, and make a good living if he’s successfull and the weather doesn’t kill his crops, and commodity prices down take a turn south, etc. I get it. I just don’t agree that you can compare statement like for like when you say “there’s big money in banking”, “there’s big money in mining”, and “there’s big money in farming”. You’re comparing apples with oranges here (jobs vs. businesses).
first reaction: WTF! Looks a little wanky to me. Though I’m not into jewellery, so maybe just not my thing.
what exactly is this, and what’s that little (B) hole. Does the battery (A) go into the (B) hole? Have you got an english version perhaps?
I’ve always liked the pilot watches like Breitling Navitimer and Tag Heuer Carrera.
I could never justify spending more than $200 on what is effectively just a piece of jewellery though.
My dad gave me his Breitling Navitimer for my 18th birthday. I lost it.
Regarding the sundial, there’s no battery needed – you just move the hole in the inside ring to the current month, put it up to the sun and it tells you the time. I think it’s oriented for Germany though so I guess you’d have to mentally adjust for time zone differences yourself. Seemed pretty cool to me though.
It would be a good conversation starter I guess, “ooh what’s that thing you’re wearing…?” But inevitably, the conversation would turn to “…so, why are you wearing a sundial?”
Sorry, I’m sure it looks great. I’m just not into fluffy pointless trinkets like these. I wear a wedding ring and that’s it.
Watches are pure jewelry items. It’s no different than a women wanting a big shiny rock except the watch at least gives you the time/date/count-time.
The diamond just sits there and goes, hey look im a polished rock.
If having the jewelry makes you happy, then go ahead… But to me, spending over $500 for a watch… is just a waste. unless you have so much money you don’t know what to do with it.
This is turning into a dbag thread.
Btw. Is Favre-Leuba a good watch company? I have an old one somewhere locked up…
