I have failed

Mathlete you intrigue me… Keep banging on those - doors it’ll come. Everybody says it, but work on networking. LinkedIn is a good blind source, but just hit people up and let them know (and honestly be) interested in their work and path to get there. Offer to buy them coffee or lunch (and actually try to if they agree to meet with you). Be informed and eager to learn. Good luck again sir.

Wake: I did, basically I find it far to dry. The amount of pure math, stochastic finance etc. will bore the hell out of me. I can do a job that is quant 90% of the time not 100% of the time.

Mathlete, maybe you’re just someone who likes to study and learn - nothing wrong with that - and who has had some bad luck when applying for various job offers. Some people regard people who study a lot with scepticism so you might not want to flaunt every skill or designation you have initially, only those or that designation that’ll help land the particular job. If you have little or no work experience, you’re first goal, surely, will be to land an entry-level job and work from there. Fine-tune your CV so you’ll optimize it to get one of those entry-level positions. Once you have it, you’ll have a job, salary and a platform to advance from. Another thing is whether you apply only for jobs with large firms or if you seek out smaller firms also, they are more likely not to have a screening process with some recruiting firm or, alternatively, may be willing to discard their usual recruiting processes if they like you and want to have you on their team. In a smaller firm you’re also more likely to speak to the CEO directly.

Re: I have failed new Posted by: whui (IP Logged) Date: July 28, 2011 11:27PM How could this be Band 6: Item Set Q# Topic Max Pts <=50% 51%-70% >70% - Alternative Investments 18 * - - - Corporate Finance 36 * - - - Derivatives 36 * - - - Economics 18 * - - - Equity Investments 72 - * - - Ethical & Professional Standards 36 - * - - Financial Reporting & Analysis 72 - * - - Fixed Income Investments 36 - * - - Portfolio Management 18 - * - - Quantitative Methods 18 - * - if the following person genuine passed as s/he claimed, given both failed Ethics? > > bro, I think you should get the ASA, imagine this > besides your name > > MathPIMP, CFA, FSA, JD/MBA, CMA, PHD > > noone has all those. lol believe it or not I’m not playing a game on how many designations I can get. Also research bores the hell out of me so phd is out of the question. Thanks for the support though!

I doubt FRA is most important. I got >70 there and still failed with <50 in only 2 sections… - Alternative Investments 18 - * - - Corporate Finance 36 * - - - Derivatives 36 * - - - Economics 18 - * - - Equity Investments 72 - * - - Ethical & Professional Standards 36 - * - - Financial Reporting & Analysis 72 - - * - Fixed Income Investments 36 - * - - Portfolio Management 18 - * - - Quantitative Methods 18 - * - FML LOL

I passed Level 1 in Dec 2010 at first try with ease. Took Level 2 with 3.5 months of prep time (and worked probably around 50 hours a week) because my boss said I should “try” and failed band 3. I scored really well in everything I should score well (I work in Alternatives and asset management): PM, Alternatives, Financial Reporting, Ethics but everything else was below 50%. I had put in definitely less than 250 hours, read mainly Schweser notes until 6 weeks prior to the exam. Then started doing practice questions and CBOK questions and realized at that point that my chances of passing are close to zero. Still tried but failed as expected. I am relieved to finally know my result for sure, signed up for next year and know I will nail it next time. I wouldn’t recommend attempting the Level 2 exam for anyone that just passed Level 1 in December and works full time. This was a trip to hell for me and I felt burned out pretty much from April through June to exam day. I know some people did it and passed but it’s definitely not a “walk in the park”. I prepared with Elan for Level 1 and loved it. Schweser in my view isn’t as good, less structured and practice questions are too easy. Elan is much more comprehensive and I feel that I actually learn from any of their practice questions because they make you think around multiple corners…Sadly, Elan is just getting started now with publishing Level 2 materials and they don’t include all the same materials as they provide for Level 1.

^I did and passed (while working full-time and having a 1 year old while finishing a MSF program). Not saying I’m the man, just saying different things work and are possible for different people. There’s no one size fits all for CFA.

Besides, although it’s true you scored over 70% in FRA, it was the only section where you got that score… 7 sections in the 51-70% range could be bad if closer to the 50% than the 70%… I passed this time but had failed 3 times before (band 8,9 and 10), and I never had more than 3 sections below 50%. It’s a hard exam, the hardest of the program maybe? You’ll nail it next time keep it up.

I agree with you, iteracom! Re: I have failed Posted by: iteracom (IP Logged) Date: July 26, 2011 03:58PM I would never think less of anyone who had to repeat L2 . I know many smart professionals who had to repeat it.

I totally agree. success with the CFA exams ( as with pretty much everything else) is highly correlated with the amount of time spent on preperation. I believe the IQ of any university graduate would enable him to pass this exam, given enough preperation.

I am bumping this one, as I believe that I will be writing down how I feel and how close of a fail I was next week. I hope it won’t be a crushing defeat as in anything below a band 8…I think it would crush me substantially more to see something like a band 5 or 6 than a close miss of 10.

Anyways; interesting and motivating to read some of the comments, as the referenced one above, which failed, felt down, but came back to beat it. Good stuff.
