Traderanalyst - that is nothing… Look at the pass score of joon87: Topic Max Pts <=50% 51%-70% >70% - Alternative Investments 18 * - - - Corporate Finance 36 - * - - Derivatives 36 * - - - Economics 18 - * - - Equity Investments 72 - * - - Ethical & Professional Standards 36 - * - - Financial Reporting & Analysis 72 - - * - Fixed Income Investments 36 * - - - Portfolio Management 18 * - - - Quantitative Methods 18 * - -
I checked his max score and it can be max 81 points out of 120: (which is 67.50%) Topic Max Pts <=50% 51%-70% >70% - Alternative Investments 18 * - - max 3 - Corporate Finance 36 - * - max 8 - Derivatives 36 * - - max 6 - Economics 18 - * - max 4 - Equity Investments 72 - * - max 16 - Ethical & Professional Standards 36 - * - max 8 - Financial Reporting & Analysis 72 - - * max 24 - Fixed Income Investments 36 * - - max 6 - Portfolio Management 18 * - - max 3 - Quantitative Methods 18 * - - max 3
How can someone flunk 5 out of 10 topics and pass…? I am starting to believe that FRA is the most important subject for level 2…
hey crusjuan, a lil bit of luck from the CFA gods and yes, I do believe FRA is the most important section. Afterall, that’s what saved me.
I scored under 50 in Corp Fin, Derivatives, Econ, Quant and Port Mngmnt. Over 70 in everything else and I passed.
Band 8, first time. After the exam I felt as though I could have easily passed or failed so the outcome is not surprising to me. Topic Max Pts <=50% 51%-70% >70% - Alternative Investments 18 - * - - Corporate Finance 36 * - - - Derivatives 36 * - - - Economics 18 * - - - Equity Investments 72 - - * - Ethical & Professional Standards 36 - - * - Financial Reporting & Analysis 72 - * - - Fixed Income Investments 36 * - - - Portfolio Management 18 - * - - Quantitative Methods 18 - - * I probably started too early, which was Oct 2010. I wanted to give myself as much time as possible to soak in what I call the Big 3 - Equity, Ethics, FSA. My strategy sort of worked, but my focus on those areas was clearly to the detriment of most of the others. I’ll spend more time on the others, probably with the exception of the most formula-intensive section of Derivatives, i.e. FRAs and swaps. I’m willing to get any of those wrong if it means a better performance on Fixed Income or Corp Fin.
How could this be Band 6: Item Set Q# Topic Max Pts <=50% 51%-70% >70% - Alternative Investments 18 * - - - Corporate Finance 36 * - - - Derivatives 36 * - - - Economics 18 * - - - Equity Investments 72 - * - - Ethical & Professional Standards 36 - * - - Financial Reporting & Analysis 72 - * - - Fixed Income Investments 36 - * - - Portfolio Management 18 - * - - Quantitative Methods 18 - * - if the following person genuine passed as s/he claimed, given both failed Ethics? Does FRA become the 2nd criteria after Ethics for automatic pass/fail? First attempt at Lv 2, and I got crushed. I kinda knew after I walked out it wasn’t going to make it, though I was somehow still hoping most of my guesses were right. Turns out most of them were wrong - got Band 4! I wasn’t surprized that I failed, but shocked that I ended up with a freaking Band 4… I nailed Ethics and Alt Inv, and did well in FRA and Equity, but didnt expect to do so bad in the rest, well except for Derivatives and FI since I didn’t give those topics as much study time as I should have. I also probably fell for the "tricks"on the exam. In the end it was a combination of not being as prepared as I should have been and some burnout that brought me down. Of course i’m disappointed as hell in myself, and the thought of going though all that work again is just sad…but that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Just got to pick myself up again and give it my all. For now i’m gona finish reading Too Big To Fail, get back into GT5 and wait for Battlefield 3, and spend some quality time with the much neglected people in my life.

Haha, you sound like the kind of guy I’d get along with. I appreciate your frankness. Yeah I’ve rewritten my resume` like 20 times. You may be right about the people skills if I was bombing interviews but I can’t even get my foot in the door. Maybe I’m being perceived as “too qualified” idk.
Mathlete, maybe you shouldn’t use all of those designations simultaneously when you apply for a position but, rather, focus on one that will fit in with the job you’re applying for.

You may be right just hard omitting stuff that you worked hard for.

Then I did a joint MBA/JD, as part of the MBA I did the CMA option which counts both towards the CMA and the MBA credit requirements. Then I did the CFA concurrently, so really I’m just a guy with a masters and an undergrad with a CFA. I don’t consider myself a freak or a genius. Those guys doing experimental physics or pure mathematics are a lot smarter than I could ever hope to be imo.
Personally I don’t see how “too many” designations can be considered a problem on a stand alone basis. If I saw a CV loaded with academics I’d be inclined to grant at least an interview to those people, worth a try at the very least. Even if they still aren’t sure after the interview they can decide to thoroughly check out references to gauge how they fit into work situations.

You completely missed the point of my post. I was trying to demonstrate how designations and academics are not the most important thing in the world. People like me pursue these designations with the view that getting them gets you a golden ticket into whatever career or future you want. That is not the case. There is more to life then a CFA or any other degree. Some of the wealthiest people I ever met never went to college. CFA does not equal happiness and failure is not the end of the world just like passing is not the beginning of a new glorious existence. I gave my story to demonstrate how you can have all the letters and acronyms and still be miserable and not get what you want. As they say in the classics “Be careful what you wish for or you just may get it.”
