I saw a bollywood movie for the first time ever today

This is the most horrific, putrid, mindnumbing piece of cinema (if you can even call it that) I have ever seen. Cheesy doesn’t even come close to describing this. This is the most rotten piece of work I have ever come across… And apparently there’s a multibillion $ industry for this…

There is a method to watching bollywood movies. All you do is look at the hot girl (whoever it is) and listen to the songs. The songs are good. What movie was it?

Dil Se (sp?) Something like that. Fairly old.

That one was actually good. A bit long and stretched out though.

Just checked it in wiki. That’s not Bollywood. Mira Nair produces good movies, not Bollywood either. Her Kama Sutra is superb.

Most importantly, regardless of the quality of that movie. The songs are what that particular film is known for. Every song on Dil Se is an absolute winner. Probably the best Bollywood soundtrack.

So… Bollywood movies aren’t actually about acting and story, or cinematography… they’re about singing and dancing? So exactly what separates a Bollywood movie, from say, a musical?

^ you haven’t seen yet a Bollywood movie. The movie you have seen is from the cinematographic movement which is not related to typical Bollywood. I heard Bollywood produces 4000 or 5000 movies a year. A movie is shot in several hours. That’s not just scheise, that’s complete scheise from head to toes. Including singing and dancing.

I saw one for the first time yesterday The cop jumped from a 20 story building into a fish-net held by his buddies.

You are now getting it man. But as Valores said, Dil Se was not a “typical” Bollywood film. I would just get your hands on the soundtrack and keep that. That’s a winner. You can impress Indian girls with your knowledge of those songs.

you havent seen $h!t until you’ve watched THIS: http://www.fishki.net/comment.php?id=80740

WOW Mobius! You found some treasure. speechless.

Dude, I love movies, I stay in Mumbai I’m an Indian. And I watch English, French, Italian, Spanish, Korean and what not, BUT I rarely go and watch a Bollywood movie in theater. And rarely I watch Bollywood flicks, and there are many many like me, who literally hate Bollywood movie, but many of them just watch them because they find a cultural disconnect in western movies, although everyone agrees Western, specially European cinema is far far far ahead of what Bollywood is. Point is, who watches these bollywood movies then? Families love them, couples who don’t find a place to mingle anywhere, go to such movies where you have to apply little brain and focus yourself on other useful activities, all others frustrated with lack of entertainment but sustainable disposable income, and a laaaaarge variety of single Indian boys and girls who go there to watch fairy tales and have goose bumps. That’s pretty much most of Indian cinema. The why filmmakers doesn’t attempt making quality cinema? First of all, in India, Indian public doesn’t decides who is going to be the star, usually the star is thrown onto them, and infact directors too, Indian film industry just stinks nepotism, but that’s good business sense, because Indian society is generally frustrated with life, and being a single middle class man in India is literary horrible, so society becomes “escapist”, which film industry exploits very well. They don’t produce cinema, they produce stars, they produce dreams which billions of frustrated people can see inside theater and get a little break from their life seeing stars who look fairer than Europeans doing the silly tricks for them, and somehow those cheesy tricks takes the average frustrated and tired with life escapist into a dream world, that’s Bollywood. Bollywood isn’t cinema, Bollywood is opium and Mecca of an escapist society. Are there really no good movies, where you can really see some great Indian cinema. There are, and actually, there are many, but none could ever score a even a Pan India exposure, mostly flops. The reason being the the utility of media for people, people go there to forget life, not to be reminded about the struggles or vagaries of life, they already have enough to deal with to add more. So true cinema neither works, nor it can ever work here. But what’s a current new change is that few bright directors are now being able to combine an escapist dream with quality cinema, it has just started happening, and that’s the future of Bollywood I guess. But you won’t ever find quality Indian cinema in theaters overseas, forget overseas, you won’t ever find such films in many theaters here too.

Ahh…early 90s. Never really got that much into Indian films, however, there are about 3-4 good movies every year, try to usually catch those.

Until they start putting full frontal in Indian cinema I will not be a fan; I want to see bush.

I agree with this thread that majority of bollywood movies are not good but there are good movies, some recent movies that I liked - Black, Dev D, Gulal, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Dabangg

3 Idiots

Slumdog Cinderella is also a great movie “Bollywood” style, made by a British. Of course, it’s an Oscar movie, so no comparison from an artistic point of view, but the story-line is typical Bollywood.
