I think the mock exams are counter productive

The whole point of doing questions is to learn from your mistakes… but with the mock exams, I think it’s counterproductive. There’s a few possible outcomes: - You pass by a wide margin and think you’re good to go. But the mock might’ve been on the easy side - You fail by a wide margin, and get discouraged and give up (I know I’d definitely get hit by this. If something is really far out of reach for me, I usually give up before trying. I don’t try unless I think I can do it). But it could’ve just been because the mock was really hard and/or you were making careless mistakes because it doesn’t really count - You get a score close to the passing mark, and continue to study You should’ve been continuing to study regardless. And because the CFAI mocks don’t give you an explanation of why you were wrong, it doesn’t really help you learn from your mistakes. Arguments FOR mocks – Refutement: - It gives you an idea of what test day will be like – No it doesn’t! It’s on a computer (vs on paper), and it’s in the comfort of your own home vs a big room with 200 other people taking it. - It helps you with pacing – We’ve ALL taken long exams before. Most of us have taken the SATs or something similar to that, and we all took final exams in college (I had plenty of 3 hour finals in college). If by now, your problem with the exam is failure to have learned basic exam strategies like not dwelling 30 minutes on 1 problem… then you have no chance at this. Sitting for 6 hours with a break in between should NOT be the issue here. How many of us have stared at the book for 12 hours straight? For $100, when it doesn’t even take you back to the questions you got wrong and give you explanations for them, totally not worth it. If it did, then I probably would’ve done them. I don’t see the value that it offers in preparing you for the actual exam. All it is, is a confidence booster or killer, either of which is counterproductive.
