For Fed it is all mental, as his game is all finesse. If he loses that mental edge, comes out of the zone - he is done. He can’t grind it like djoks or nadal
I’ve seen this in whitewater. Guys who are beasts get in their 40’s and run heavy stuff relying on their technique over athleticism. Usually these guys say it’s some of their best years of kayaking. I think what some people miss is that in some ways these are probably some of the best and most rewarding years of Federer’s career. He probably understands and approaches the game in a different way than he used to and gets a lot of enjoyment out of taking on younger players using his experience.

man’s got mouths to feed - no shame in making the finals at his age. however it does hurt fans going into the final knowing he only has an outside chance of besting Djoko. As long as he’s making the semi’s, he’s still got it IMO.
Anything he wins in the “taper off” part of his career counts to his overall record too. At this point, what matters to him is not individual titles, but the few more titles he can win so he can be regarded as the best player of all time. Even if he is past his prime, it makes sense to keep playing while he still has a reasonable chance at winning. Plus, he probably can’t be the best tennis player in the world without some being pathologically competitive. So it’s probably hard to admit when it is time to retire (although I believe that it is not yet the time).
