i’ve never heard this story, and i’d be willing to bet a lot of NFL fans have not heard it, which proves the whole point of the story.
Not excusing Manning, but as others have said this is old news. Despite the author’s claims, it did get a fair bit attention at the time and then also again when the accusations about Winston. Not sure how journalist who often covers sports could be unaware of the story until someone tweeted him after the SB.
FWIW, the trainer accepted a $300,000 settlement from the school in 1997 and the Manning incident was 1 of 33 she claimed occured at the school beginning in 1990.
I think Manning almost certainly did what the trainer claims, but interesting that it’s being brought up again now.
Ah, old news. Peyton Manning legit Bill Cosby.
^ A spoiled college athlete putting his sack on a female trainer’s head is a far cry from a grown man drugging and raping women.
Well I was purposely being obtuse however if we’re starting the conversation with “Peyton’s sexual assault isn’t as bad as…” then he’s already lost.
Fortunately for Manning all this stuff happened when social media wasn’t the force that it is today. Unfortunately for him this dude decided to unearth all of this now. Why? I have no earthly idea. But like Turd said, a LOT of people had no idea this even happened. Speaking for myself, I only knew of the allegations of the act itself, not the depth of the cover up and the subsequent harassment by the Manning family. This is obviously one side of the argument but Peyton and Archie come off looking pretty evil here.
And if you want to tie it into the recent HGH story where Manning sent guys to Charlie Sly’s family’s house to the point that they called 911 and Sly felt obligated to recant quickly after… I mean there’s a lot of smoke here. I’m not exactly sure what the fire is/would be, but seems to be a ton of shady shit going on behind the scenes of Team Manning, whether it’s a few months ago, a few years ago or 20 years ago.
I’m curious about what your point is behind this? Because Deadspin broke a bunch of them out and it seems they all have merit and this woman was not only physically but emotionally abused to high hell at Tennessee. Further, she did settle and that probably would have been the end of it if the Manning’s didn’t further prod her with the book, Archie’s comments, etc. They clearly were out to attack her well after the “settlement”.

All of this is appalling. Tennessee, Peyton, Archie… jesus christ the south is a cesspool.
Already knew the original story, never thought he was the greatest person on earth he is an athlete. The whole bit about trying to pin it on someone else is new to me and terrible though. If it knocks his image down good, doesnt really matter how he played on the field. As for his accomplishments, I am more concerned with his doping scandal.
I dont get why people care so much about celebs/athletes, I dont expect much out of them other than to entertain me. I really dont care who they date, what food they like, what beer they drink, if they do shady stuff (obviously illegal is bad for them & I look down on but I still dont really care what happens to them)
Two things:
A) Manning has to retire now. Between the drugs and this resurfacing (I didn’t know people didn’t know about this 13 years ago), he’d be crazy to come back.
B) Shaun King is an idiot. For those of you that don’t know (maybe it was linked above but I didn’t bother to check) he’s the one that’s going after Manning and wrote the article that brought this back to the surface. When I say King is an idiot, I don’t mean that as in “I disagree with this guy so I’m going to call him a name.” I mean he’s literally a human of below average intelligence. He’s a bad writer (that article was brutal to get through), he makes convoluted points, brings race into just about everything just for clicks, and he does not seem to actually understand Manning’s legal situation.
Here’s a great piece by Florio (an actual lawyer) on just how stupid King is:
To recap: Manning is still one of the greatest of all time. He probably did rub his taint on the trainer’s face and did some HGH (or something similar). I don’t advocate taint rubbing, but it was a long time ago and it was public knowledge. To bring it up now is just a smear campaign and puts me in the awkward position of defending unsolicited taint-on-face contact.
Oh, and f’uck Shaun King (the Daily News writer, not the football player).
Do I have your permission to use this as my signature line?
Bahaha dude linked Mike Florio after spending a paragraph on how awful of a writer someone is. Got any Rick Reilly articles you want to share too?
I think you should. Taint to face contact is a serious issue that’s largly goes unreported.

I don’t think he was saying Florio is a good writer, but he is a lawyer and his article corrects some of King’s incorrect legal discussions.
OK. He has no pride left. He retired.
Let the GOAT debate begin!
Im not going to start a GOAT debate because its a silly one to begin with. Lets just appreciate what we got to witness from Peyton in him prime and let that speak for itself. Same will go for Brady when he retires. Obviously those 2 are the easy comparison but I am just glad we got to watch them battle it out so many times in so many classic games. No need to compare either to Montana, Elway, Unitas, Marino etc. They are all legends.
Time to see if Cam can continue his performance and step into the realm of consistently one of the top QBs to play the game over the coming years.
Given how much the NFL game has changed to be more passing game friendly, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rodgers or Luck or some yet to be drafted kid will end up easily surpassing Peyton and Brady’s numbers. Brady’s super bowls will be a tough one to overcome, but passing statistics should be easily surpassed.
Yeah. Manning’s yardage record doesn’t stand a chance. If Brees and Brady both can play three more years at an even average level of performance they’ll both pass it in 2018. Touchdown record is definitely within reach too… especially with Brady and Gronk being extended through 2019. Of course betting on the health of a 37 and 38 year old QB to play out 3+ more seasons is risky but the way the NFL continues to protect its QBs and increase the impossibility of defending receivers I’d say both records go down by either one or both of those guys. Rodgers career started too late for him to catch up I’m guessing. Luck is probably the best bet of the next wave.
On the retirement front, I’m kind of bummed now that it’s official. Brady/Belichick vs. Manning was on the schedule every season despite them not being in the same division because the teams always finished in first. That was always the marquee game to look forward to when the schedule was released every year.
So apparently the Colts are planning to retire Peyton’s number next year, as well as erecting (heh, heh) a statue of him in the stadium.
Too much too soon? Or does he deserve it, not only for his on-the-field play, but his off-the-field endeavors?

If it wasn’t for Peyton, the Colts would not still be in Indianapolis today.

Why would he not deserve it?
