If you had 30,000$ and 3 months...

I think this thread is somewhat indicative of why the consumer is struggling. Get my hands on some money and first thing that comes to mind is how fast can I blow it on discretionary expenditures.

I am just 1 step ahead of you… I have always wanted to go and have now booked flights and 3 weeks off in November! I have a ton of friends that have been; the most experienced travellers have told me that they took $3000 for 3 months and did not slum it. I expect to spend rather more. I plan to live like royalty most the time, but will do a week in a thai kick-boxing camp.

option 2: Fly to London and do a little backpacking ending in St Petersburg. Book a ticket on the trans-Siberian rail to Beijing via Mongolia. Continua to SE Asia. You’d have to start w/ visas now though…

numi/Etienne: For SE Asia, check Cathay Pacific, they used to have a deal where you could fly unlimited in the region (starting/ending point from LA or SF using Hong Kong as hub while in the region) for a month for around $1k. A couple friends and I did this and saw 6 countries in 31 days (including Japan, HK, Phillipines, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia.)

If your a beach lover, I imagine it doesn’t get any better.

I’d flip a brick of Peruvian flake for 18 g’s, find a workers to throw in 6 more, get a second brick, two Glocks, two prepaid phones and a spot, then proceed to bubble the 30,000k into 100,000k over the month of August. I’d walk away with a little over 80k tax free. I’d probably buy a used beamer, payoff my student loans, and allocate the rest to getting an MBA.

Kamachatka (sp?) is supposed > to be extremly beautiful too!! I was in Kamchatka in 2002 with 15 of my cousins ages 14 to 65. It was my first time in Russia. I saw lots of bears and several active volcanoes. The salmon was amazing. I also got drunk on vodka with some soviet era hunters who are now tour guides in a remote wooden shelter that can only be visited two weeks a year. I definitely recommend going to Kamchatka!

Wow. Sweet. A co-worker of mine from Russia who has never been there, or anywhere in the east, which is most of Russia, says it’s his number one place he wants to go in Russia

newsmaker-did you climb denali with a guide service? If so what one? sorry for the off-topic…

I really do plan to do this before beginning MBA. Relax in a sauna after a couple shots and take a dip in Baikal, spend a week doing a home stay in some nomad’s ger in sipping on fermented milk in Mongolia’s foothills. ahhh… the thought of these opportunities this is the stuff that keeps me working…

Ya Thailand is probably #1.

Right now my plan is: 1. Play poker in Vegas or Atlantic city for 2-4 weeks to see if I can survive off it. (I have played semi-pro successfully in europe for 6 months 2 years ago) 2. Backpack Asia for 2-4 weeks as my gf will be in KL for a month (Thailand definitely on the list, renting and riding a motorcycle over there also in the back of my mind) 3. Go back home for 2-4 weeks, after living in Dubai for 9 months seeing friends and family is a must! 4. Do my CAIA charter and study level 3 CFA in the free time (planes, trains, lonely nights…) 5. … Hope I get other good ideas from you guys for a #5!! Although cycling and mountain climbing seems like lots of fun, it’s not my thing… Safari in Africa is on my to do list but timing is not great right now… I was thinking doing volunteering work in latin america while learning spanish. Playing golf/tennis non stop in a cheap area for a while… (but thats nothing I cant do weeknights or weekends while workings.) Thanks alot for your input guys, keep it coming if you still have imagination!!

I must respectively disagree. 1. he HAS the money… as opposed to “my house jumped 20% invalue so I can take out a HELOC even though I still owe 80%” or "I just got another o% APR credit card offer in the mail… 2. I put travel, especially the more economical 3rd world variety more of an investment as opposed to “consumerism”. It appears that he’s not neccessarily expecting to spend all of his savings (I hope).
