If you had 30,000$ spare change and 3 months of completely free time, after which you had to take on a full time job… What would YOU do… Thanks for your input. (For the curious: I’ve just been made redundant and got a good exit package, found another job which starts in 3 months.)
First thing i would do is post about it on the AF forums. Then second thing i would do is give it all to next person that replied =D (Ill be emailing you my home address now)

~120,000 Ramen noodle packets…and try to eat them all in 3 months.
coke and hookers season? na id travel the world… places that you wont get to see on a 2 week holiday from work. vietnam, laos, indonesia etc. two of my brothers have done it and both count it as the greatest experience they’ve ever had. they did for 9 months
I’d probably spend most of it traveling (assuming a financial position that didn’t require me to put it into savings) through Europe. Whatever is left over (probably not much with the $ the way it is) would roll into my PA.

Definitely travel. This is a rare opportunity. Once kids and family enter the picture this will be impossible and a lot more expensive. 30K can go a long, long way if you are thoughtful about it. Find a friend to go with you if can (someone else recently unemployed?), will make the experience better.
Absolutely. Get on a plane to a very distant destination.
study for the CFA designation.
Go to south africa and watch a world cup game in 2010. But with the extra time and money I would make some stops along the way such as Egypt and Kenya ( go on a wildlife safari). So basically travel to places where I didnt have to use my line of credit/ takes more than 2 weeks etc.
(1) Go to Tanzania for a safari and a tough climb to one of the seven summits, Mt Kilimajaro. (2 weeks, $7000-ish) (2) Europe – see Rome, Paris, Spain, London, and do some more climbing in the Alps (3 weeks, $12000-ish) (3) Back to the USA – Yellowstone, Arches, enjoy some rest and luxury in LA and Hollywood, climb Rainier, and then train for and climb Denali in Alaska. (7 weeks, $11000-ish) Results – saw and enjoyed several of the best cities in the world, saw and enjoyed the most beautiful places in my home country, and climbed two of the seven summits, certainly keeping myself in pretty good physical shape.
Wow, that’s a nice situation to be in. Congrats. I would try to connect up with a group of cyclists and ride through South East Asia on a bike for a few months. That would be ridiculous (and would cost much less than $30K).
Put $20,000 into my PA. Go to Thailand for 3 months. $10,000 will easily last. Although now is not the very best time of year to go.
- buy a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and decent camera. 2. ensure passport is in pocket and possibly get a couple inoculations. 3. start riding, sell bike once you hit puerto angel and book a flight to buenos aires.

And start revolutions on island nations when you’re done… Si, Fuser! Viva la Poderosa!
Exchange it for $500,000,000 Zimbabwe
Travel…and don’t do anything job or CFA related Etienne – speaking of Thailand, I’m thinking about going there in November or December of this year. Can you recommended any good sites or sources to get acquainted with potential itineraries, and what are the “must see” sites there? I’m thinking of going to Southeast Asia with a couple of friends for about a week and a half.
TRAVEL then when you return buy something nice
