if you have to be invested, then.....

what do you like? PREFACE: I was looking at great depression history, and as BAD AS THIS IS right now, the great depression stats, esp mortg default rates, GDP decline, and unemployment rates were FAR worse. I cant wait till this economy improves and America can once again be the greatest nation on earth. The worst strategy in the past 100 years has been selling into panic and trying to time entry and exits out of the market. FACT. IDEAS: portfolio allocation i like here: 20% cash, 30% staples, 20% health care. The rest I leave to you. Cyclicals like UTX and MMM, maybe?

I wish someone could come up with a bear case for consumer staples.

Give me quantitative facts proving your are the “greatest nation” please…

That’s such a ‘dumb american’ comment, there’s a reason the majority of the free world dislike america and it’s not jealousy…

or the non-free world for that matter…

no, the free world too…

But my country (Italy) still has the best food in the world

I agree that this is not the place to be puking out your investment holdings, BUT looking at great depression history and drawing parallels to the present environment is WRONG. How do you know the current environment is not going to be a lot worse 1 year down the road? How about drawing parallels to the environment leading up to the crash and the current environment?

Dude, when you have a Presidential election fought b/n Obama and Biden vs. McCain and Palin, you can bet those days are over. If 8 yrs of Bush doesn’t make you raise your game, it’s over.

Just get a list of ETFs ( gold, china, oil, water, … whatever) , plug them into Matlab, get an efficient frontier, and then pick your risk level. I plan to do that when things stabilize a little. America is not going anywhere any time soon, in my opinion, it’s still the country that offers the most opportunities for people from all over the world. You’ll always have the brightest and smartest people trying to move to the US and make it big here. Just the fact that Obama (a Balck guy, with a Muslim middle name, originally from Kenya and who grew up on food stamps) is running for president makes me respect this country even more. You’ll never see a Frenchman from Arab origins running for mayor in France in a 1000 years (the same applies to Blacks in England, Turks in Germany, …)

Or are you talking about challengers to US hegemony?..

Shocking that people like that can rise to such positions of power. Also disagree with your first point.

I think the US should exit NATO. I don’t understand why the hell we should be guaranteeing Europe’s security. F-em. They don’t really share our values anyway

GOD BLESS AMERICA! THE GREATEST FORCE FOR GOOD THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.

Do I hear bells of WW III.

I was not referring to the “quality” of the ticket, I am not American and I don’t get to vote anyway, so I don’t really care who wins. I am talking about the endless possibilities for people living in this country. A guy like that had not chance of making it out of poverty anywhere else in the world, here he was able to go to Harvard and is very close to even becoming president. And it’s not just about minorities, Russians have no chance of getting anywhere in Russia unless they’re connected to the “right” people. Chinese will get nowhere in their country either unless they’re associated with the communists, and the list goes on and on. In my opinion, as long as America remains the destination of smartest, brightest , most educated and hardest working people on earth, it will always rise back.
