“The distinguishing feature in the Massachusetts law is that job seekers will no longer be compelled to disclose their salary or wages at their current or previous jobs — which often leaves applicants with the nagging suspicion that they might have been offered more money if the earlier figure had been higher. People will still be allowed to volunteer their salary information.”
I f*cking hate that. I’ve been interviewed where they insist on knowing your salary but won’t tell you the range. It’s informational asymmetry and you know they’re just using it to dick you over.
Sucks it’s gonna take two years to go into effect, but it’s a nice step in the right direction. Making the employer move first takes a lot of the bullsh*t out of the entire process.
A friend of mine was actually asked for his last three years’ W-2’s when interviewing for a job not too long ago. He told them they were welcome to look at the next 3 years before they mailed them to him. He didn’t get the job.
Yeah, there is a well known AM firm here in Boston that requires four years of W-2s. It’s unreal. I actually started laughing on the phone at the recruiter when he told me that because I had already gone in for the interview. I was like you miiiiight want to lead with that next time because there is literally no chance of that happening.
I once had an interview that requested tax returns if you had employment gaps. I played along but I was in the middle of a dispute with the IRS. I brought along my files regarding the matter. The IRS claimed I made 5 million in one of the years. I’ve never made anything close to that, but the accusation was enough to scare off the employer. No job offer for me. Didn’t want the job anyway. Doubt I would have played along if I had been serious. I was using the interview to get experience with the process. The company was know to have a ridiculous gauntlet.
