The rules are different for different people.Whether the accused was guilty or not, time will tell. Indians have taken a lotta crap and not just from the Americans. For whatever reason/compulson, the govt has taken a tough stand this time.
the common man on the street is supportive of the govt stance. Finally they have shown some spine they say. the removal of barricades etc was IMO the right thing to do. Americans are generally percieved as source of $ by the tourism industry. for others they are uncouth and extremely arrogant.there is curiosity, amazement and even envy towards Americans.
Personally I’m not very sympathetic towards Ms Devyani. Sounds like a toolbag who thinks she is above the law.
That being said, we all know this has nothing to do with whether she broke the law or not. Simply it is about how powerful your nation is and if it is willing to defend its personnel and safe face. Given that India is weak and spineless, I don’t expect them to do anything.
The Indian govt likes to put up a fight for the most banal of things. Where was all this outrage when their own were running around killing sikhs with voter lists in their hands?
The average Indian doesn’t really care, TOI got people of the street, like street workers etc to hold up posters saying ‘America’s arrogance’ etc and ran the story as protests. The sad part was it was so damn transparent.
sikh riots took place ages ago and not really relevant to this issue
TOI is TOI-Let. the common man isn’t influenced by media debates or the talking heads on the 9 pm news. He takes what he sees, percieves and experiences. A white skinned person is a foreigner. they can not distinguish between an yank and a brit.
Mattters of diplomacy are rarely a topic in our daily conversations. But as an Indian , I endorse strong retaliatory response to the Americans.
Canadians are just as bad as Americans when it comes to many of the things Americans are criticized for. I don’t know how we’ve escaped ridicule for so long.
