Interview with Wachovia Securities in SF

Hi all, I have a interview with Wachovia Securities next week for a part time paid internship. Is anyone on this forum familiar with the company and its culture? Thanks. My background: junior at UC Berkeley with major in Applied Math. CFA L1 candidate.

I presume this is for their Financial Advisor division. If you have an interest in that line of work, their program for interns and new recruits is top notch. I can answer many of your questions, just ask.

ws on this forum is also in that division…

I am currently interning there part-time - not in SF tho. I agree with what hueion said - if you like that line of work, you will not be disappointed.

hueion, I am considering an offer from Wachovia for their FAIT program. Are you in the program/have you gone through it? It does seem to be pretty good. Maybe too good. What am I missing? Also, what kind of hours do FAIT’s really work? Thanks!

FA training program is pretty good…very intense from what I have heard. Tell them that you are into the Wachovia Way.

yes it is for the FA division. 1. It seems like there will be only one interview, could anyone give me some advice? (the Wachovia Way thing is very helpful. Thank you, ws) 2. What is the difference between part time and full time (summer) internships? Does a full time experience with some local FA company worth more? 3. “Compensation is subject to experience and ability to add value to the practice.,” so what is the range I should expect? One of the pros for this job is that I can take a summer class in the afternoon since the work hour is from 6 to 1, but then it makes my life expense a bit too high (tuition is about 1K). Thank you all for the replies…

For the interview, you will probably just meet with the FA in the office. If it is a group office, it willl be the FA you will work with. Personality is a big issue for recruits. So, be open, be on your game, and be sure to say hello to the receptionist. Think of it more as an apprenticeship. You will be thrown in the mix early and will be expected to take on most of the work a Jr. FA would handle. One bonus, you should be able to get your Series 7 and 66. However, that will depend on the FA. Ask questions geared toward taking on responsibilty. As for summer vs. part time, it is just a workload difference. I believe part-timers work 20 hrs/wk while in school. I don’t know the pay, but $12-15/ hr seems reasonable for an internship. On the lower end for new to the industry and on the high end for a jr. or sr. in as a 3rd yr intern.

Bottom line…FA is a sales position. Yes, try to get them to sponsor your 7 and 63 if you can during your internship. That way, if FA is the kind of work you would like, once you are out of school, you will be that much ahead of other candidates.

I don’t have a problem w/ sales, IMO, selling myself and people skill are important in any kind of career, especially for people w/ quantitative background like me. I will definitely ask about the sponsorship for S7. Thanks.

Not to be a prick, but your quantitative skill won’t do much for you.
