iPhone vs. Android vs. BlackBerry

To go along with all those other threads where people made horribly wrong predictions on how Apple would fail, let’s but this on the record. Who is going to win this war? My vote remains with Apple, I think they get “it”, Steve Jobs gets “it.” They still seem to be the only company that can consistantly leverage new technology in a way that is approachable and cool for the average consumer. If only one of these survives I say it’s the iPhone. Second I would say droid, last I would say BlackBerry. When I graduatec from undergrad, 2006, one of my last courses / projects was a comany analysis for my strategic management class. I argued that RIM should sell it’s business while it’s still hot.

How is the Drioid? I want to chuck my Blackberry out the window half the time and was thinking about a switch. For some reason I just cant get my head around the idea of buying an iPhone. I feel like its a semi-badge of honor that I havent joined the cult yet. Or maybe Im just a moron. Probably the latter.

APPL. Everyone is so far out of the game they don’t even know what the game is, APPL get’s it. I’ve been saying that since I bought a butt load of stock at $85 when they first announced the iPhone.

i’m not sure how the war will be setup as the droid is open source. long term i bet droid>appl>bb>palm droid is not restricted by itunes or jobs and can run flash

Ticker Fail. The ticker symbol for Apple is AAPL. Anyway, the iphone beats all phones. However, I have never owned a Driod or BB.

It’s really too early to tell, but what’s your timeline? In the short term, it’s Apple’s race to lose. However, I think they’ve strategically erred by prolonging their lucrative choke hold on AT&T. In doing so, they’ve created the Juggernaut that is Android, and a lot of animosity from people on non-AT&T networks. If Apple returns to their bread and butter – innovation – then they will be fine, since people have short memories. At this point, however, their rate of innovation is about the same as Android’s, and Apple’s throwing up roadblocks left and right. I have been an iPhone user since it first came out, but I am switching to an Android phone soon, perhaps DroidX when it comes out. RIM is dying, Palm was quaint, and MSFT is so clueless it’s embarrassing.

I’m sick of people hyping “open source” and all that similar bull crap around tech devices. I was comp sci in undergrad and for years I listened to idiots drone on about how Linux is soooo much better than Windows, it’s gonna be the new hot thing, blah blah blah, Nokia phones (this is before iphones) are the best because of all the snazzy tech features & open source software options, etc. Simple fact, the mainstream consumer public doesn’t care about open source based on their track record and most likely they won’t start with the droid. In fact they revile it because it tends to become less standardized and tougher to troubleshoot. Even though mozilla’s free (and better), most American’s older than 30 don’t know what it is, none of them can tell you what linux is, and this is why in the end, droid will lose. Maybe 1 in 10,000 have the ability to actually utilize an open source system while the other 9,999 lack the tech savvy-ness and will gravitate towards the iPhone interface and clearly laid out itunes structure, etc. Moreover, for those same less tech savvy individuals, they will use price as an indicator of quality given a lack of other basic understanding (market studies show this) and again, iPhone OS will win over open sourced ware.

That goes backwards however…if they did THAT it would become like the whole disfunctional PC nightmare. The market likes that it works, and it works cause it is locked down.

I believe the restrictions focus on a quality vs quantity thing. As I said, for the very minor % of tech savvy people demanding the absolute max, an open system is great, ie. linux, by restricting the system and maintaining control, apple can ensure quality standards and the majority prefer the simplicity / structure.

Got an A in the class and on that report I believe - not a 100% sure. 99% of the class vehemently disagreed with me. I’d have to look back at the report to see what the stock price was, but yeah, it’s definitely went up a ton, and now it’s coming back down. I never claimed timing was my thing. My recommendation was based on the fact that RIM was successful only based on a specialized core compentency, and that specialization was bound to deteriorate given what that specialty was (business e-mail) and the market they were participating in. Obviously I didn’t think it would take 4 years for someone else to figure out how to get e-mail in a smart phone right; but that speaks to the incompentence of RIMs previous main competitors (Palm, Samsung, etc.).

But didn’t the world economy crash in 2008, erasing a decade of gains for the market as a whole? And isn’t RIMM still more than double it’s value in 2006? Sorry. I just can’t take anyone who uses the term “core competency” seriously.

i do enjoy how easy the iphone is to use and agree that the system works well (itunes, etc.), but i like the versatility of the droid (flash, full keyboard, hd video, setp-by-setp nav)

The thing to remember is that the housewife, or the guy serving your dipcone at DQ, doesn’t care about being an IT guy or reading a 500pg Bold manual…they just wanna snap pics, shoot a video, post it to their blog remote, call their buddy video style and flash him their butt, listen to music, all at the same time, *intuitively*. It is always the tech guy, like my MSFT buddy, that says “oh but you can get more features on bla bla”, he owned a Zune (the only customer), and that is why the industry was broken, nerdy tech guys “designing” products (huge no no). AAPL gave the solution to a frustrated market, and we witnessed the response. I’m not convinced any of these other people really get it, if someone comes out with something better than the iPhone in the next 10yrs I’d be shocked. There is a buttload of catchup to do and the iPhone gets more perfect every year (and is fused flawlessly with mac). Also when I was in Shanghai and Seoul I see peeps walking around with iPhone everywhere…Asia is a big market. I could be wrong, just can’t see how the other guys can win in < 10yrs. Zune fans flame away…

whats a zune?

I work close to MSFT and I’ve never actually seen one actually…I heard it was an iPod killer.
