I’m curious to know if taking a job with a reputable company would be bad if I know I’m going to an MBA program in less than a year. Let’s say I do a good job while I’m there, but in 8 months I put in my 2 weeks notice. This role would be a lateral move from MO to MO but at a better company and higher pay. And let’s also suppose I would definitely want to work at the same company but in a different role later after MBA. Would leaving in a short amount of time basically eliminate future opportunities?
Doubt it. I’ve left a couple of jobs after less than a year for one reason or another (usually moving interstate) and they have always said they would take me back if I change my mind (and there is a job open)
It’s not ideal but as long as you can explain the move (typically due to either career progression elsewhere or layoffs), you’re ok. I had a job that I was at for about half a year but moved on because my team got hired by another bank so we all moved. That’s pretty analogous to your leaving your role to move to business school, so you should be fine.
As long as you build it into the work conversation that it is something you want to do, shouldn’t be a biggie with the employer. You will then be seen as following up on your word. Your colleagues may even look up to you as a ‘man of action’ if you play it right.
If things come up, that’s one thing. If you have a premeditated leaving that you give 2 weeks notice on with no warning, you can pretty much kiss working with that same group good-bye. But most companies are rather large (mine has hundreds of thousands of employees worldwide); you may be able to find a similar or better role with a different group.
If you are doing a good job there, how about make them pay for your MBA and go back to the same company once you are done with MBA…did you have that conversation with your boss yet?
Honest question… do any employers pay for an MBA anymore? Back on topic, if you’re people-enabled, any negatives of a quick job move would be more than offset by the networking value of meeting all the extra people at the new company.

The tuition assistance programs I’ve seen usually cover only a small dollar amount of the total MBA cost (depending on where you go) and you usually have to pay it back if you leave the firm within a certain period of time. I’ve never heard of a free ride with no strings attached.
