Maybe the master social engineers of Japan induced this situation because they foresee an AI dominated future and want their population to shrink so that unemployment and the problems associated with it are prevented.
Slowly shrinking populations are generally problematic for employment, because fewer people leads to lower demand and revenues. Rapidly shrinking populations (e.g. the Black Death) do tend to be good for employment, provided you survive whatever factor culled the population, because a lot of jobs that had been performed are no longer performed, there has been no time to adapt the workflow, and people find that their needs and priorities have changed.
