I saw the newer version of the quartet with his sons at Blue Note in New York in 05.

to all my fellow jazz fans here - if you wanna get your friends into jazz, throwing them straight into the deep end of the pool with stuff like monk or coltrane’s later stuff is probably not gonna work too well. i went out and got “kind of blue” after i read that duane allman said that all he listened to for 2 years was miles and coltrane. and i hated it at first. just like i hated scofield and metheny before i was ready for them. but then after i got into more rock and funk tinged jazz-ish stuff like MMW, scofield’s funky stuff, chick corea’s fusion stuff, etc. that’s when i really ended up in the “real jazz” end of the pool. also, it is a lot easier for someone to become interested in real jazz if they are a musician, understand chords and scales, and have a pretty good ear. otherwise it’s pretty much a melodic cacophony backed up by a rhythmic vibe that is pretty ancient for most young people today - swing, as opposed to rock / funk

what are some good smooth, chill jazz that you’d play at a lounge/cafe?

I just happened to pick up 3 of his albums during lunch. -Take Your Shoes Off -Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark -Some Rainy Morning

I’ve been digging on this German band called Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. Weird name but very good music. Very chill and has a noir-ish detective movie sound. The music is smothered in sax and Fender Rhodes keyboard. It’s more for the after-party if you get my drift. Believe it or not but the band’s members used to play in heavy metal bands much like what the members of Rodrigo y Gabriela used to play. The album of theirs I’ve been listening to the most is called Sunset Mission. I highly recommend any fan of jazz to check them out.
