Jazz

For most of my life, I’ve been listening to indie, classic rock, alternative, etc, but lately I’ve been listening to jazz music. I’d really like to develop some good knowledge about jazz. Any of you guys into jazz? What kind of stuff do you listen to? I find that listening to jazz at work helps me focus and be more productive. Weird.

Not weird… Most instrumental will increase your focus. Some of my favorite jazz is Cantaloupe Isalnd by herbie hancock, miles davis, and coltrane. Check out thelonious monk too.

I love jazz, what kind of jazz are you looking to get into? There are many different genres of jazz, from bee-bop to classic jazz to fusion to new wave. i’d recommend Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and “A Love Supreme” by Coltrane for starters. I am a classically trained piano player but learned jazz piano in the last few years and have really developed a liking to many of the jazz greats on the piano. I also have been to many many jazz venues over the last few years so it is certainly an area of music that I have grown fond of and truly appreciate from a musicianship standpoint.

Blues baby blues…Buddy guy, Eric Clapton, Johnny Mayer…blues is where its at bro.

Stan Getz - to get the ladies in the mood

Ahmad Jamal- Pittsburg. A truly great work.

Teenage girls need not apply. Check out the following in this order: Stevie Ray Vaughan , Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, The Black Keys, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Fleetwood Mac (pre-Stevie Nicks, yes they were a blues band) Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and Albert King.

Goodbye Porkpie Hat Red Garland’s Piano

I didn’t mention Hendrix’s and Zeppelin’s blues offerings because those are obvious but definitely worth checking out. Hendrix’s Red House is my favorite song of all time followed closely by Fleetwood Mac’s version of Jumpin’ at Shadows (Duster Bennett original) Fleetwood Mac - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3ure6_pa2M

Buddy Guy’s place in Chicago is a dive but one of the great blues spots in all Chicago. Highly recommend and the man does guest appearances still to this day. took many a hoe there.

The outside is shabby, the inside loud, the drinks ok. But the music is great more often than not.

fx guy’s rec is solid- canteloupe island by herbie is a great disc. thelonius monk is definitely a top 5 jazz pianist for me. i’m less of a blues girl, but any of your boys throw on “blues” by hendrix (cd has red house on it and many other greats), you might have a shot. other guys on the scene today that i love: brad meldhau the bad plus medeski, martin, and wood- shackman and another day in the universe are amazing albums for a bit more funky/jazzy (their more old school stuff) i was about to say chic corea, jason moran, etc… and now i’m thinking to myself, hmm, maybe I personally love jazz piano more than any instrument? i have a lot of love for the trombone also… jj johnson won’t do you wrong. for a talented duo- check out marco benevento and joe russo. maybe a bit less jazz more rock, but what a keyboard player and a drummer can do to songs (especially led zep or radiohead tunes) is pretty cool stuff. there’s a start. name an instrument, mood, whatever… happy to keep suggesting. i love jazz. and reading about the history of it is very interesting stuff. the whole huge ken burns series he did on jazz maybe 5 or 6 years back is a good place to start if you want to begin your history lesson.

Not into jazz. Its jazz week here didnt really like what I went to see. But I guess I can see its charm to an extent and appreciate the intricacies (spelling?)

alright, here’s my breakdown by genre to take a look into classic jazz: Lee Morgan, Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, Lee Konitz for more avante garde styel: Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman for jazz fusion: Allen Holdsworth, Jaco Pastorious and Weather Report, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Yellowjackets. modern jazz: Hiromi Uehara, Brad Meldhau, Abdullah Ibrahim, Ashival Cohen, Wolfgang Muthspiel jazz pianists: Bill Evans is the best, Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Mccoy Turner, Art Tatum. that should keep you busy

Thanks for all the recommendations. I will start with the classics.

Not one mention of Dave Brubeck?! The man is a living legend! His album Take Five is probably the best piano/horn jazz album of all time. There’s actually a really old video of him and the rest of his band playing Blue Rondo a la Turk. It’s on YouTube and it’s awesome.

How is Albert King at the bottom of the list?? haha I’ve got him right up with Stevie. Anyway, great list… Don’t forget Robert Cray though

What about Joe Bonomassa? Probably one of the best live blues guitarists around…
