I work at an unconventional finance company (ie. not research or IB, etc.). I’ve just finished my 2 year entry level as “Analyst”. I want to propose to my boss about upgrading my title now to something else - can you all help in suggesting as many as you can? So far, I have
-Associate (but too vague if it’s not a bank such as where I’m working)
Being called a senior analyst after two years of experience seems like a stretch. My firm recommends giving that title to folks with a minimum of 8 years of experience.
Really depends on the type of firm. I’m in business valuation and if you just make it to senior analyst after 8 years it pretty much means you are never going to advance any higher.
A senior analyst at my firm makes an average of $200k per year in salary alone. I’m not sure what the bonus structure is for them but it’s definitely more than my 40% target. I would be okay with topping out in that range. And my team is in the midwest.
Bear Stearns had the most ridiculous promotion structure I had ever seen. You could go from analyst to associate in 1year. Then to VP in another year. But as a VP you would be making less than a analyst at another investment bank.
^ Very true that titles mean nothing. VP titles come without additional pay and are thrown around like candy at my firm. Looks good on a resume though.
We don’t already have a structure in place because we are a small shop, although we’ve multiplied five-fold in the last 2 years. I was one of the first to join the firm so after 2 years of the obvious title, it’s time to graduate to another one. I agree that titles are worth nothing, but as a small shop, each individual carries relatively a lot of weight in representing the firm to clients/partners; hence, it’s a superficial title that we need in order to get some kind of respect from the peeps across from us in the boardroom. If I didn’t have to worry about that, I would totally call myself “Dictator”.
It seems senior analyst makes sense though. Thanks y’all!
