I am interested in educating myself about this sort of diet as it relates to athletes. Not convinced I am personally going to go this route in my diet, but want to get all the facts down.
What are some of the most respected sources for this approach? I know a few of you seem to reference and/or show interest in philosophies that minimize carbohydrate, non-animal based foods, or processed food.
Peter Attia and Rhonda Patrick are two legitimate Scientists/ Medical Doctors who have done a ton of research or utilized the research done by their peers regarding Ketosis . Despite the touted benefits they associate with it none of them seem to be using it often bearing in mind that these two people are very serious about their own health and athletic performance.
My two cents for anyone interested in Keto:
Get a 23andMe or similar reading of your genes which is relatively cheap and consult with a medical professional who knows how to relate the two (I think the 23andme people do it for you) and then start your journey. It’s also a very complex mechanism and isn’t in my opinion a one size fits all approach. People like dave asprey and other gurus have turned into a snake oil business without much proof in science.
The two scientist that study it don’t even practice it…that’s “interesting”.
Nonetheless, I will see what they have discovered.
Personally, I know a woman with rheumatoid arthritis who has made great progress on it (she now does cross fit). I also know of the ultra runner Zack Bitter who does it. Bitter admits, however, it is not for everyone and it greatly benefits some while others do fine on a carbohydrate based diet and need not bother with it. (That might be where genetic profiling comes in)
23andme says I have musculature similar to world class athletes and no gene for pattern baldness. Seems pretty legit. Also, very little Mongol ancestry compared to other people.
when I was in college I did keto for like 4 months straight. You do get shredded… but it screwed up my hormones
edit: also, if you like kissing your wife or whomever, get ready for them to constantly tell you your breath smells like crap. And also, for the sake of neutrality, there are a lot of negative parts of keto too. The link above will only give you the positives. but does it work? Well, yeah, no shit it does, you naturally will find it hard to eat to maintenance if you’re working out by 60% fats and 35% proteins. You’ll lose weight with ANY diet if you are in a deficit like that for extended periods of time.
No. This is one of the most rigorous diet that I had found on web. I simply wanted to ASAP fit onto my long term average mass. Since in one moment I was about 105, I had decided to try with this one. Try to Google “Medicine diet” or “Orange diet”. It takes 3 x 5 days series. It is worth mention that it rigorously worked only once and initially. I tried two times more but got-off only few kilos.I’ve been forced to change all eating habits and kind of food entries to keep my new mass of about 90 kg. Otherwise, probably would be a Yo-Yo effect.
Peter Attia did it for years and quit because he wanted to be able to eat his kids birthday cake. He isn’t a scientist and talks about he has never felt as good after stopping
Rhonda Patrick isn’t a keto person, she just knows the research. She’s very focused on micro nutrients in her research and she worries keto may not have enough micro nutrient diversity
Some keto researchers admit they don’t have the will power to do it. Dr. Dom is one who is a researcher, is keto, and is very physically active
I’ve been in ketosis for about six weeks (with one notable cheat day). Basically keeping net carbs below 20g and keeping my fat intake around 65% of my total calories (which is pretty damn hard to do, actually). My goals are different than yours though. I entered a competition to lose the most % of weight in six weeks - ending this Saturday. I’m going to win easily and I have a nice dad bod for the pool now.
Anyway…that’s not what you’re going after. You need to talk to the good folks at www.reddit.com/r/ketogains. They have plenty to say about both building mass while on keto or just living an active lifestyle. Some treat keto like alcoholism and go so far as to say having a cheat day (carb loading) is akin to falling off the wagon. That’s a bit extreme in my view. Others believe carb loading is essential if you’re going to be very active.
Either way, I can tell you that some things often overlooked while going keto is the amount of water you need to drink. It’s absurd. You’ll struggle to get enough sodium and electrolytes so you’ll also need to find a good recipe for a keto friendly, electrolyte heavy drink (I have a great one if you’re interested). Oh, and fat bombs. Fat bombs are awesome.
