i work just outside of toronto, frequent job listings and know some young guys with ~3 years experience and all three levels of the exam done, who make 80k all-in. we’re talking RA positions here, not IB positions. if you can even get a job in toronto right now, you won’t get much over 80k unless you’re 40. we’re also talking toronto, not vancouver or calgary where cost of living is 200% higher.
exactly. IB position is different than RA. RA’s often work for 60-70 hours and IB analysts cross over 80 in a week. So remuneration is different

People in Omaha are pissed at you right now. And since it’s my duty (and partly my job) to defend these firms I have to throw out that Lipper awarded Ivy best small mutual fund company and American Century best large mututal fund company earlier this year. (Awards based on three year risk adjusted returns. Past performance is no indication of future performance. When interest rates rise, generally bond prices fall.) Now it’s compliance approved too so feel free to make investment decision based on this post.

You’re a wealth of statistics - Im impressed. Check your stats bud. Cost of living is highest in T.O., then Van, then Calgary in Canada. I know youre talking Research (Im in it), and maybe, a 1st year at the Sh!tt!est firm in Toronto made $80 one year, but it’s def. not the norm.

Whats the “typical” pay for a 1st yr (no-mba) research associate/assistant? If BB research dept. pay 60k + ~50% bonus, I highly doubt that the shittiest firm in Toronto paid $80k.

First off, you can’t group a research associate with an assistant, they’re far, far different. Associates are not straight out of undergrad and typically require minimum of 2 yrs experience (preferably 3 or 4). “Assistant’s” straight out of undergrad would fall in the 60k range I guess, im not too familiar. If I wagered a guess, a first year Associate (not assistant) at a BB would be 110 - 140 all-in. Are you saying a BB pays ans Associate ~90k all in, in Toronto? And
Makes sense. 110~140k (90k + 30~50% bonus) is ball park range. Didn’t know you were talking about the associate level which usually meant fresh out of MBA or having 3~4 yrs prior experience. But I would add that this is sell-side research where pay is very much tied to number of years of experience. Buy side is very different. I have seen lvl 3 candidates with 3 yrs of experience make less than 70k all in (low AUM shop) and a similar candidate make 200k all-in at a long-short hedge fund. These positions are not located in NYC.
