leaving a company

Would like to get some thoughts on this: 1) You give a 2-week notice but your boss asks you to stay for a month because there are several projects in the pipeline. You dont want to. Could boss create problems for you? 2) What if you dont want to tell your current employer who your new employer is. You are paranoid that they might try and create problems for you.

Does that mean you landed the new job? Good work. Numi will give a good example for #1 from personal experience. Here is what I’ve done the two time’s I’ve left. Letter for boss. “I will be moving on from company. Please have my final day be 04/xx/09. blablabla… Regards, Ditch” I typed up an email that read the following to be sent to coworkers; “Greetings, I will be moving on from company. I’ve enjoyed my time here and thank you all for providing me with valuable guidence and experience. Regards, Ditch” Keep it short, sweet, and to the point. You don’t want to/have to give much information as to why you are leaving and where are you going. I would not include in the letter where you are going to. Tell them verbally if you want to. It really is none of their business, so do not feel obligated to disclose it to them.

If your new employer wants you in two weeks, tell your boss to piss off. You have no obligation to tell them where you’re going. But I think if they did something to keep you from getting the job you’d probably have some legal recourse. But that said, I’m assuming the new co did a background check, in which case HR probably knows where you’re going. needhelp Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Would like to get some thoughts on this: > > 1) You give a 2-week notice but your boss asks you > to stay for a month because there are several > projects in the pipeline. It’s important to gauge how important the project is and how nicely you’re able to tell him you want to leave after 2 weeks. 2) You are under no obligation to tell them. However, if they want to give you problems, it’s unlikely they need you to tell them who you are working for. They will find a way to complicate your life if that’s what they want. It’s a tough situation, but it will payoff to make it as painless as possible.

Congratulations on what sounds like an offer on the way. needhelp Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 1) You give a 2-week notice but your boss asks you to stay No. It has happened to me, just say “as a courtesy to my new employer I must stick to the traditional 2-weeks”. > 2) What if you dont want to tell your current employer who your new employer is. You are smart not to talk. It has happened to me when the other shop was a competitor, just say “I prefer not to discuss”. It sounds like you don’t trust these people much. There is probably a reason for that or maybe you are just paranoid. Anyhow, you gots rights…they can piss off.

I’ll quote a post I wrote from an earlier thread: Re: quiting with notice? Posted by: numi (IP Logged) [hide posts from this user] Date: March 23, 2009 06:22PM I gave just a few days’ notice for my previous job because I didn’t see the purpose in giving anymore notice. Plus, I just didn’t want to sweat it out in my previous job and wanted to have more vacation time to myself before starting my current job. It was important for me to maintain my mental sanity, and I didn’t think I’d be burning any bridges by leaving. Of course, my boss did try to twist my arm about stuff after I announced my resignation, but he kept doing that just about every day before that and I just felt like enough was enough. Haven’t looked back since.
