Actually I would say that is fairly accurate based upon the salaries of the higher ranking compliance officers at my firm. Need to be at least VP level though. Also many have law degrees. 30 might be pushing it, but by 35 absolutely.
If you start working in compliance (a job you could land with a mediocre academic background) right after college you’re looking at 8 years of experience by the time you hit 30. Now if during this time you gain experience in the 33, 34, and 40 acts and you understand equities, derivatives, FI, etc and the regulatory agencies which monitors them, plus you got some management experience, you’re looking at 175 - 200 base plus 25% bonus (in NYC). Double that if you have a JD and triple it if you have JD from a top school.
Way to let the secret out, TJR / Dapper!! However, I think you’re both overstating the importance of a law degree - no one in our group has one, including the CCO. Homie - Compliance brings a lot of value to the table. Why don’t you look into it more and then come back with some informed comments / questions. Numi - Granted that there are a lot of dull compliance roles out there, but investment management compliance isn’t one of them. I have to run off to a meeting now, but I may write more later.

I have a lot of respect for compliance people. They tell truth to power.
You could work for JT Marlin and sell the next “HOT” Biotech Stock…
