Level II (June 2012) and FRM (November 2011)

Hey Guys I’m currently enrolled for Level II in June 2012 and I’m considering the FRM. I have a few questions: 1. Is it too late to start studying for the 1st FRM exam in November? 2. How does the volume of work for the 1st FRM exam compare to Level I CFA? 3. Does the 1st FRM Exam overlap with Level 1 CFA Material? 4. Will I find it hard to balance doing the FRM study and starting the CFA Level 2 material? Will I jeopadise my Level II result by studying for the FRM instead of starting preparations for Level 2 earlier? Thanks

I did FRM level 2 and CFA level 2 during Nov - June year cycle. I found some overlap between FRM level 2 and CFA level 2. It helped a little in fixed income, derivatives, portfolio management, alternate investment areas of CFA level 2.

Why not clear L2 and then do both FRM L1 and L2 at one go in Nov-2012 ?

I might as well do them now then? Unless i start studying for frm1 and 2 right after taking level 2 in early june

yeah thats what i mean, you can start immediately after L2 and then try to clear it. Atleast that is what i plan to do. I am just afraid that in order to do too many things at one go i might end up screwing both. Anyways depends person to person, you can do it if you feel you can do it

Hrmm! What other ways have ppl here done these two designations

Hi thanks for putting this. Actually I should have put the question on forum before doin anything. I registered for level 3 June and frm November. Let’s see what others have to say. Haven’t started studying for any of the exams yet.

Areyouserious are you undertaking both frm parts in the same day?

The average FRM candidate won’t start studying for the FRM November exam until September or so. > 2. HOW DOES THE VOLUME OF WORK FOR THE 1ST FRM > EXAM COMPARE TO LEVEL I CFA? An FRM level is about 3/5ths of a CFA level in terms of the amount of material you need to know. > 3. DOES THE 1ST FRM EXAM OVERLAP WITH LEVEL 1 CFA > MATERIAL? Something like 20% of the FRM1 material appears in CFA1. > 4. WILL I FIND IT HARD TO BALANCE DOING THE FRM > STUDY AND STARTING THE CFA LEVEL 2 MATERIAL? WILL > I JEOPADISE MY LEVEL II RESULT BY STUDYING FOR THE > FRM INSTEAD OF STARTING PREPARATIONS FOR LEVEL 2 > EARLIER? Most people don’t start studying seriously for the June CFA exams until January. So if you start studying CFA at the end of November after the FRM exam, you will still be ahead of the average person. vgmalu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > WHY NOT CLEAR L2 AND THEN DO BOTH FRM L1 AND L2 AT ONE GO IN NOV-2012 ? I don’t recommend this. While it is still possible to write both FRM1 and FRM2 on the same day, I suspect that very few people are successful in passing both. Writing FRM1 in November 2011 then FRM2 in November 2012 is your best plan. This should not interfere with your CFA June exams in any way.

Wendy, your a great help. thank you!

yeah good help. I’m only taking part 1.

i am going to do the same areyourserious as i am moving into a junior PM role which is also heavy on risk management. good luck to both of us!!

Yeah, Good luck Penny-wenny

I should mention that when I wrote FRM1 in Nov 2010, only 39% of us passed… meaning that the “average” candidate failed. So if you’re planning to write FRM1 in November, you should probably start studying fairly immediately.
