Libations

Some people think “libation” is simply another word for alcoholic beverage. It’s not. A libation is an offering of the first drink to ancestors, deities, or fallen comrades. It is believed to have originated in ancient Egypt, been adopted by the Greeks, and eventually copied by the Romans.

This Memorial Day weekend will not be celebratory for me. A good man recently decided he no longer wanted to be a part of this world. He saw a lot of evil, both abroad and at home, and the general consensus is that he gradually lost his humanity.

All of this is to say that, when you pop a top this weekend, remember there is true evil in this world, and be thankful for those who try to keep the evil at bay. In so doing so, some lose their lives, and some lose their humanity.

Here’s an example: https://www.al.com/news/huntsville/index.ssf/2018/05/christopher_henderson_al.html

This case will probably haunt the investigators for the rest of their lives. Some will find positive coping mechanisms, others will not.

Cheers.

Jesus, man. We’re always being so sarcastic and cynical on this forum, it’s easy to lose track of the big philosophical picture of existence. My best thoughts for you during this weekend, buddy.

Condolences on the loss of a good man. A toast to his memory!

I’m at a wedding reception now; the father of the bride passed away from cancer last year. We offered him and all those who couldn’t attend a moment of silence.
